Despite owning the import and claiming that
Super Smash Bros Brawl is the
11th best Nintendo game ever, Gamedaily.com have also brought up the possibility that, to some, Brawl might suck. In fact, they have listed the top reasons as to why they think people will be disappointed with Brawl.
(Though, personally, I'm glad that there
isn't any voice chat in Brawl's online mode. The last thing I want is some moronic fanboy "trash talking" me and ruining my gaming experience).
Mashing buttons equals victory
Say what you will about the different attacks and the interactive stages, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl is nothing but a glorified button masher. We're sure that throwing a well-timed Pokeball will often lead to success, but with so much going on, especially with F-Zero racers knocking into you and waves of lava swallowing everyone up, it'll be difficult to get your bearings, let alone become a hardcore master.
Star Fox overkill
Although we don't mind three characters from the Star Fox franchise- Fox McCloud, Wolf and Falco Lombardi- we're pissed that they share the same Final Smash. Yay, it's the Landmaster battle tank again and...wow...again. Instead of being lazy, Nintendo needed to instill these characters with their own signature attacks.
Slow connection speeds
Considering the company's lack of online gaming experience, we expect hundreds of thousands of gamers attempting to connect at the same time and the service going kaput. Even Microsoft, online extraordinaire, didn't account for the overwhelming number of consumers that logged onto Xbox Live during the holidays, thus rendering the service inoperable.
No voice chat
Laying the smack down on opponents around the world is great, but it's almost meaningless without being able to talk trash. Beating someone up and assaulting them with put downs is one of online gaming's guiltiest pleasures, and Nintendo's decision to cut voice chat from Super Smash Bros. Brawl makes multiplayer battles too impersonal.
No online rankings
There's little to no point defeating gamers from other states/countries if you have nothing to show for it. If we somehow run through 2500 opponents, we want that splattered on a leader board so fools know who they're messing with. Leave it to Nintendo to miss the opportunity. Without an online ranking system, we foresee us switching to more advanced video games.

And for me, all the online stuff doesn't really matter. I'm probably never going to play Brawl online, as it's infinitely more fun to play with the people sitting in the same room as you.
I wish it had voice chat, but i can live without it, i just hope that online over here in america isnt slow
The series should have never been represented.
What are you, broke? Get the goddamn LAN adapter. Don't go wireless.
This is a benefit. Idiot article author.
LOOK AT ME FLAUNT MY E-PEEN. Meanwhile, I bask in the idea that every match will be random. I'm more irked by the lack of seeing others' names during a match.
The real issues are
-Extreme similarities to melee
-More clones than before and a lack of new unlockable movesets
-Online will suck due to immense traffic
Personally I find some of the new movesets don't offer that much anyway.
Similiarities: Being from the same franchise, some characters moveset and some of the modes.
Differences: Some veterans have new moves, newcomers, no clones, online, Subspace Emmisary, masterpieces, cooperative (event matches, target test, homerun contest and Subspace, online cooperative, final smashes, assist trophies.
Yeah, it's very similiar to Melee, indeed. {/sarcasm]
That's only in Japan. There's hope that Nintendo might fix the issue before it releases here.
How is it not a fighting game? Pretty sure it's a fighting game, it's just unique. Unless of course the characters aren't fighting...But they are.
Then again its not a fighting game although neither is God of War and Devil May Cry yet its branded as a button masher.
As for the other faults, I disagree with most. I'm so glad there's no voice chat and leader boards are pointless to me. As for the fox 'clones', I'd rather have them than not. Its better to have a few characters with similiar styles but grave differences than to only have one and nothing else. Its a matter of 'something' or 'nothing'. Heh...
And by the sounds of it, its going to come down to 2 things, 1 do you like Super Smash Brothers, and 2 do you like fun games. Cause thats the usually the only thing that matters in SSB games.
Although for me after awhile i get bored killing the opponent.
Which is why i haven't played Melee and the first one for years.
I do have to say though, that the copy and paste of Fox characters really gets on my nerves.
personally i havent had fun with a smash bros games since the n64 days it was a cool factor back in the day playing with 3 more friends in the same tv, but now like 8 years later its more of the same and its just like meh been there done that.
Hah! Gotcha! I just so happen to have a friend who just plain LIKES the game.
I'm a little worried about the "button mashing" dealie. Super Smash has never really been about button mashing (a button-mashing newbie would have no chance against a veteran who can time/predict their attacks). Does Gamedaily mean that the Super Smash series has always relied on button mashing (in which case, they're wrong), or do they mean that Brawl specifically has an issue with button-mashing? I hope it's not the latter.
p.s. Oh hooray, I got thumbed down for having a perfectly valid opinion!
I was looking for to everything they listed and no button mashing but it seems with button mashing even the newbs can beat the veterans if they just randomly pressing buttons to string in hits.
And you just stated the exact reasons why I don't want it. I don't want to listen to trash talkers, nor do I want "deal with and get over it". If I'm playing online I want to enjoy myself, and being "trash talked" doesn't aid in my enjoyment.
Oh gee, I do wonder how I could ever enjoy an online experience without being trash talked.
The lest few points are potentially valid. They're new to online, so we expected gimping in this generation, in addition to Nintendo's tendency to half-ass serious matters.
My big grief is like I earlier mentioned with too much/little representation of characters that do/do not deserve it. Do I even care about Yoshi anymore? Not really. I can understand gimmick characters like the Ice Climbers, despite the fact that they had one game that wasn't terribly mind blowing. Castlevania games and Mega Man games were deeply entrenched in Nintendo's earlier years though. Where's Simon Belmonte? Where's Mega Man?
A lack of Sonic would have ruined the game, as I would be crying whenever I played it.
Seriously, button mashing fails against a pro, a average or even a novice player.
