Gamedaily: What if Brawl sucks?

Gothic Girl | February 10, 2008 | News | Wii
Despite owning the import and claiming that Super Smash Bros Brawl is the 11th best Nintendo game ever, Gamedaily.com have also brought up the possibility that, to some, Brawl might suck. In fact, they have listed the top reasons as to why they think people will be disappointed with Brawl.

(Though, personally, I'm glad that there isn't any voice chat in Brawl's online mode. The last thing I want is some moronic fanboy "trash talking" me and ruining my gaming experience).
Mashing buttons equals victory
Say what you will about the different attacks and the interactive stages, but Super Smash Bros. Brawl is nothing but a glorified button masher. We're sure that throwing a well-timed Pokeball will often lead to success, but with so much going on, especially with F-Zero racers knocking into you and waves of lava swallowing everyone up, it'll be difficult to get your bearings, let alone become a hardcore master.

Star Fox overkill
Although we don't mind three characters from the Star Fox franchise- Fox McCloud, Wolf and Falco Lombardi- we're pissed that they share the same Final Smash. Yay, it's the Landmaster battle tank again and...wow...again. Instead of being lazy, Nintendo needed to instill these characters with their own signature attacks.

Slow connection speeds
Considering the company's lack of online gaming experience, we expect hundreds of thousands of gamers attempting to connect at the same time and the service going kaput. Even Microsoft, online extraordinaire, didn't account for the overwhelming number of consumers that logged onto Xbox Live during the holidays, thus rendering the service inoperable.

No voice chat
Laying the smack down on opponents around the world is great, but it's almost meaningless without being able to talk trash. Beating someone up and assaulting them with put downs is one of online gaming's guiltiest pleasures, and Nintendo's decision to cut voice chat from Super Smash Bros. Brawl makes multiplayer battles too impersonal.

No online rankings
There's little to no point defeating gamers from other states/countries if you have nothing to show for it. If we somehow run through 2500 opponents, we want that splattered on a leader board so fools know who they're messing with. Leave it to Nintendo to miss the opportunity. Without an online ranking system, we foresee us switching to more advanced video games.

IMO, the first one couldn't be more wrong. Me, 3 of my friends, and my girlfriend play Melee all the time. Most of the time, my girlfriend just button mashes while she tries to learn the game, and ends up being the first one eliminated (we play stock matches).

And for me, all the online stuff doesn't really matter. I'm probably never going to play Brawl online, as it's infinitely more fun to play with the people sitting in the same room as you.

it seems that either every one is hating Brawl or loving it. But its like that with many franchises.

I wish it had voice chat, but i can live without it, i just hope that online over here in america isnt slow

Tbh, no rankings could possibly be a good thing. If people are looking to get onto the next highest rank, then they'll probably go looking for more sinister methods (glitching etc.) to achieve it.

The button mashing and ranking aren't really great points.

    The real issues are
    -Extreme similarities to melee
-More clones than before and a lack of new unlockable movesets
-Online will suck due to immense traffic

Personally I find some of the new movesets don't offer that much anyway.

There are less clones than in Melee.

      ConkerASkyJockey | February 11, 2008
No clones in Brawl, dude. Do some research.

Similiarities: Being from the same franchise, some characters moveset and some of the modes.

Differences: Some veterans have new moves, newcomers, no clones, online, Subspace Emmisary, masterpieces, cooperative (event matches, target test, homerun contest and Subspace, online cooperative, final smashes, assist trophies.

Yeah, it's very similiar to Melee, indeed. {/sarcasm]

That's only in Japan. There's hope that Nintendo might fix the issue before it releases here.

Of course button mashing equals victory, its a button masher. This is not a fighting game, its just a flashy brawler/party game. I can't believe how popular this series has been. Its the same simple thing over and over. Now thumb me down puppets.

I disagree. It's not the same over and over, each match is different. There are strategies, advanced techniques, etc. that make this series great.

How is it not a fighting game? Pretty sure it's a fighting game, it's just unique. Unless of course the characters aren't fighting...But they are.

Yeah, for the most part that's pretty true. Only times that doesn't apply is when a pro knows what he/she is doing and is able to dish out some powerful moves or combos without being stopped.

Ninja Gaiden Series proves that theory incorrect. Please play that and mash the buttons and tell me where that lands you

Then again its not a fighting game although neither is God of War and Devil May Cry yet its branded as a button masher.

I was commenting to you, not the topic, if i were to comment on the topic or article i know most wouldn't like what i would have to say. My point is games like God of War and Devil may Cry is branded as button smasher or mashers and its not a fighting game, its an action game. Thats my point. It doesn't have to be a fighting game to be a button masher that is also part of the article. So in a sense it is relevant to the topic.

You're making less sense with every post you make and even your comment was in no way relevant to what I said. You brought up action/adventure games when I specified fighting games. You're basically going around in circles.

Actually, its pretty much impossible to win a Smash match by button-mashing- unless you're fighting a complete novice. The freedom of movement, items, unique stages, and countless other factors are very harsh to common brutes that button mash. As fighting games, Smash Bro.s has cut out a large portion of the beginners that slam on the buttons to win. Better luck next time,iLLmatic. Ha.
As for the other faults, I disagree with most. I'm so glad there's no voice chat and leader boards are pointless to me. As for the fox 'clones', I'd rather have them than not. Its better to have a few characters with similiar styles but grave differences than to only have one and nothing else. Its a matter of 'something' or 'nothing'. Heh...

I love how People are glad that Brawl doesn't have voice chat, but i can tell you its can't be any worse to XBL. I haven't heard anything worse then what i experienced playing Halo online. And thats a similar game to Brawl in the sense anyone can play it and have fun. So i wish it did have Voice chat.

And by the sounds of it, its going to come down to 2 things, 1 do you like Super Smash Brothers, and 2 do you like fun games. Cause thats the usually the only thing that matters in SSB games.
Although for me after awhile i get bored killing the opponent.

Which is why i haven't played Melee and the first one for years.

No game is ever perfect, these really seem like minor setbacks to a pretty decent game. Sure, button mashing is overplayed in video games, but if done correctly equals fun.

I do have to say though, that the copy and paste of Fox characters really gets on my nerves.

I'm a little worried about the "button mashing" dealie. Super Smash has never really been about button mashing (a button-mashing newbie would have no chance against a veteran who can time/predict their attacks). Does Gamedaily mean that the Super Smash series has always relied on button mashing (in which case, they're wrong), or do they mean that Brawl specifically has an issue with button-mashing? I hope it's not the latter.

p.s. Oh hooray, I got thumbed down for having a perfectly valid opinion!

I disagree GG Voice chat is always welcome. I mean sure we don't like people to talk trash but if you played Halo online before(the worst talk trashers on live btw) thats exactly what you get, hell that what you get with most if not all online availability games. Its just something you need to deal with and get over with.

I was looking for to everything they listed and no button mashing but it seems with button mashing even the newbs can beat the veterans if they just randomly pressing buttons to string in hits.

If voice chat is "always welcome" then why did I just say that I wouldn't welcome it?

And you just stated the exact reasons why I don't want it. I don't want to listen to trash talkers, nor do I want "deal with and get over it". If I'm playing online I want to enjoy myself, and being "trash talked" doesn't aid in my enjoyment.

    Sonic Flash | February 11, 2008
The first two points are silly. SSBM tooks skill and the verdict is that SSBB will take skill as well. Though the Star Fox trio is somewhat annoying, apparently they play very differently and their attacks are different. I would have preferred that they used other characters though... Like Mega Man or Alucard or Simon Belmonte...

The lest few points are potentially valid. They're new to online, so we expected gimping in this generation, in addition to Nintendo's tendency to half-ass serious matters.

My big grief is like I earlier mentioned with too much/little representation of characters that do/do not deserve it. Do I even care about Yoshi anymore? Not really. I can understand gimmick characters like the Ice Climbers, despite the fact that they had one game that wasn't terribly mind blowing. Castlevania games and Mega Man games were deeply entrenched in Nintendo's earlier years though. Where's Simon Belmonte? Where's Mega Man?

A lack of Sonic would have ruined the game, as I would be crying whenever I played it.

lol all this reasons are just silly. What pisses me off is number 3 seriously no ranking system. There's no excuses nintendo, and as for SS:BB being a button smasher that's just the way it is MGS4 has always been more strategic, GTA has always been a free roam kill whoever get's in your way, and Halo just always been that great online shooter. I don't expect much more from it the strategy is to knock the other player off the island. Do it in whatever way you see fit. Nintendo's already given me enough to stay active on brawl for years online.
