Developing PS3 games isn't a problem for Activision.

Well it seems Activision found some tools that helped developing PS3 games easier and efficient. If Call of Duty 4 is anything to come by, expect more great titles from them in the future.
Michael Griffith(president and CEO of Activision's Publishing Unit) did say it was still a tough nut to crack but without those tools, development would be a trail and error approach.
quote
Over the past year, our central technology group has created a proprietary set of tools for next-gen development that has enabled our developers to address the challenging PS3 architecture in efficient ways. Our tools allow us to identify performance bottlenecks in the PS3 and focus our effort in a targeted way to improve performance that would otherwise without these tools simply be a trial-and-error approach.

Be sure to check more on the source, 10 pages worth of information.
What you are seeing with many publishers is they are unable to simultaneously develop and launch on the PS3 and the Xbox 360. Instead, they develop and release one SKU at a time or they simply don’t release a PS3 SKU at all. Call of Duty 4 represents the best-in-class next-generation development, making it the number one selling title of all time on the PS3.

I don't see how this is a big thing for specifically Activision. Activision is a publisher, not a developer, they don't make the actual games.

The people responsible for the success of COD4 on both systems is Infinity Ward.

No kidding, but the point is about making games for PS3, and stating developing games for the PS3 is alot easier with these tools and people should not be complaining about the difficulty anymore.

That's not really the point. The point has always been lazy developers and that this was NEVER an issue. PS3 games are not more difficult to program for, they're just different.

Example. If you learned to play Chess before you learned to play checkers and you were playing chess long before you played checkers and were really good at it then you wouldn't be as good at playing Checkers. Neither are more difficult they're just different. There might be more rules but rules do not immediately make things more difficult, only different.

The fact is now it's easier for those lazy developers with these new tools. That being said, I don't think Infinity Ward is one of those developers.

Anyhow, Finalblade you'll submit anything that's proPS3. Stop thumbing my comments down, I said absolutely nothing wrong.

I actually disagreed with your post thus warrant off a negative from me, thats allowed.
We said the same thing expect one thing, the PS3 is new hardware completely revamped from PS2 its hard to develop for thats fact. Im not denying they're lazy devs but still that doesn't negate the fact its still new hardware and not easy to make games unlike the 360 games.

My article isn't supposed to be pro Sony, in-fact im not pro Sony, I use MS windows and such to that nature i only posted this to say that these tools is what helped them make CoD4 on the PS3 very good. In fact if you have read the article or what i put in the description which was

And that was with the tools they had, it just the trial and error approach wasn't even used sine it made it easier but still difficult to make CoD4 for the PS3.

So i don't see how im being pro sony here, im not here to be biased im here to post and submit articles, stop trying to pick a fight. Why post on my articles if your not going to contribute anything to the article or read it.

Finalblade, you can't disagree with my comment. My comment is a fact, not an opinion.

          Activision=Publisher
          Infinity Ward=COD4 Developer
New tools for PS3 for easier development=helpful to all developers, not just Infinity Ward and not just helping Activisions games they publish, hence, not a big thing specifically for Activision.

jmac353 has a good point here. All Activision really did was get the game ready for release; Infinity Ward did most of the hard work with COD4.

I fail to see how using an OS that's used on about 95% of the computers in the world has any correlation to one's corporate preferences when it comes to video games. Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft fanboys alike all use computers, and most of them use Windows as the operating system. I'm not trying to call you a fanboy, so don't try to get the wrong impression of that last statement. Now, if Sony and Nintendo were to develop their own operating systems at some point down the road, this point could be debatable, but at the moment they have no plans to do so.

Avalith Sony already has their own OS and that is Linux, if you didn't know. I also use that cause i find it more suitable for other stuff. But if i was pro Sony i wouldn't even consider buying a MS product which i have plenty of by the way. Jmac doesn't understand the article as it is. It was supposed to be good news that in the future Activision or Infinite ward will make great games, just like Call of Duty 4 was the first best port or multiplayer games the PS3 has gotten so so far. Since we all know how bad they been getting with the multiplayer game treatment.

jmac, you're completely wrong saying that the developers are lazy and I really wish people would stop saying it. Us programmers work very hard to learn new code bases and every time a new platform is introduced, its literally like learning a new language. This is no different with videogame consoles. The developers are not lazy. Sure, in some cases they may be, its not out of the question. But, it takes time to show the potential of any console, because the language is new. The architecture of the Cell chip just makes things even more complicated, but the outcome is potentially worth the extra work needed.

      jmac353 | February 11, 2008
Please explain to me how it's not lazy? That's your *bleep*ing job. I know it's hard work. I could never do it. I'm not saying it's easy, but when you're a programmer and it's your job to do this and you make money for it you need to work harder to make things work. You're supposed to be professionals.
"The architecture of the Cell chip just makes things even more complicated, but the outcome is potentially worth the extra work needed."
Exactly. The fact that the PS3 has the CELL honestly means that every single PS3 game should be more technically advanced than any other game on any other console. That's it plain and simple. So when we aren't seeing these results, we're seeing lazy programming or inefficient programming.

Ok, since you didn't acknowledge a word I said, other than the few that you wanted to argue with, I'll say it again...

When a new platform is released, running on a new OS, built on completely new architecture, and in the PS3's case, built around the most complicated processor known to gaming, it is the equivalent of learning a new language, which takes time to adapt to. Can you master the Portuguese language in a couple months? No, you cannot. How about French? Again, not possible. This is no different with programming videogames. Technology is useless without the understanding of how to utilize its advantages. What good is the power of a Ferrari if you don't know how to drive? Are you understanding my point yet?

Look at games of last generation like Resident Evil 4, God of War II, Metal Gear Solid 3, Final Fantasy XII. Now take a look at the graphics in these games in comparison to games that came out early in the PS2's life. Do you see the correlation yet? Its the same with the PS3, the XBOX360, NES, Dreamcast, Intellivision, etc. Look at Mass Effect on the 360 and compare it to Just Cause. Compare Call of Duty 4 to Call of Duty 3. This is not a new concept, rather it is the very standard practice of the industry. Look at games on PS3 like Uncharted, Unreal Tournament III, and Ratchet & Clank. These games came out in the PS3's first year, but they look as good or better than games on the powerful XBOX360 after 2 years of experience. This is the advantage of more powerful hardware, yes, but the console is not omnipotent right out the box. Yes, the Cell has the potential to make everything else look dated, but you are completely ignoring a host of other factors that need to be addressed before this can happen. If you still feel the need to argue, then you are deliberately being ignorant to the facts.

No shit it'll get better with time. The point is, how is it not lazy? Some developers have come right out and said "it's too hard to program for the PS3." That's laziness.
iLL I didn't disregard a single part of your comment. I acknowledged how it's like learning a new language when I said I know it's hard and that I could never do it.

But then they wouldn't be able to release it on 360 if it filled up a blu ray disk. Not that's a bad thing from my point of view. But they get more money from releasing it multiplatform.

Its impossible to utilize the power of the cell to its fullest right now, and if they were to do it now, the PS3 would last only a year or two before Sony has to rush another System, get that jmac.
the PS3 took 6+ years to get the power of the PS2 fully capable of doing things in God of War and God of War 2.

Yeah there is some who think the PS3 is difficult, no question but they are the ones who never even developed a game for PS3, let alone try. While these devs has, and if it wasn't for Sony helping devs with the developing tools, games like UT3, Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank wouldn't be the quality at which they are. And these tools that Activisions have just makes it even better. Stop being ignorant. iLLmatic is right in every aspect.

    On that note:

Stop acting like you just said a clever smartass remark. Obviously they're not gonna be using the Cell's full power, but that doesn't mean developers just HAVE to take complete advantage...they might as well wait half a decade before they do.

It's a trial and error, Insomniac's a perfect example, with each game they make, they kept making a better game after the other. Though that's first party so I'm gonna take a 3rd party developer, Ubisoft.

They've been making great multiplatform games and have been getting better with each game. While you still have dipshits like EA who can't seem to make enough of an effort to at least polish their games...their football series on the PS3 is a perfect example of that (not to mention The Orange Box).

NHL 08 and Burnout Paradise is the best EA games i ever played, besides Road Rage.

Seeker stop talking as if i know nothing, i was commenting how stupid jmac comment was:
      quote
it has to do with utilizing the CELL processor to it's full extent.
That would be 100% right. Right now the PS3 hasn't used 50% let alone 40% and the games are freaking awesome. It takes years before you can use all the power of the console to its fullest, God of war 1 & 2 proves that point. Its no different to PS3, if devs started using 100% or utilizing the CELL processor to it's full extent then Sony won't last long in the competition. And Thats why i stated they would need to make another console in a few years if that were to happen.

I also stated that 360 has yet to use its full potential as well.

Sorry to break it to you, bro...but Paradise was developed by Criterion Games not EA, and NHL? It's Hockey, dude...if they have problems struggling with hockey games then it's pretty obvious they need to lower their standards.

        quote
That would be 100% right. Right now the PS3 hasn't used 50% let alone 40% and the games are freaking awesome
Isn't it a little bit early to tell how much "power" it's been used already? I'd like to say that games like Uncharted are taking advantage of the Cell's power, unlike games such as F.E.A.R. or any other shitty port you can think about.

        quote
if devs started using 100% or utilizing the CELL processor to it's full extent then Sony won't last long in the competition.
See, that also made no damn sense. Why immediately make another new alien technology when developers are FINALLY starting to grasp the PS3's technology?

Sorry to break it to you but Burnout Paradise is published by EA just look on the box if you have it. I never said they made it, same with NHL08. The hockey games had sucks loud for years until 06 came, then 07 sucked, then 08 turned out great.

Um not from guticb and existenz the max amount of percentage used was 30 right now. No other game has gone more than 30% for the cell processor so its not early.

Cause the PS2 took years before games utilized full power of the system. If it was that easy to used the Cell full, 100% power than i don't see the system standing the test of time as Sony speaks. There is no reason to do it. There was an article on here long ago about me saying a game using 50% of the cell and every disagreed.

Who cares who published the game? There's a fine difference between publishers and developers, and we're talking about a game's development, so your point just died.

Don't tell me that those are your sources...So Uncharted, right? I'm pretty sure that's what you mean. So the developers said that they used about 30% of the Cell's power, apparently? The point is they took advantage of it quite nicely, the issue is that other developers don't even try to take advantage of it, and THAT is the problem.

The PS2 didn't last long because it took this long to "unlock its power", it lasted long because it has an immense amount of games in Japan and it still has A LOT of support from SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) AND MOSTLY because developers have years of experience on the PS2 already.

Thanks for the best laugh I've had in my entire time on Neoseeker. Linux is not a closed source, proprietary OS like M$ Windows is. It's an open source kernel that's widely developed and maintained in multiple different languages with hundreds of different distributions for users across the world to download.

No, Sony Vaio computers run Windows out of the box. Again, get your facts straight. As far as I'm aware, Dell is the only computer manufacturer that installs any distributions of Linux for you, and you have to specify you want Linux when you place your order or else they'll install Windows. Any computer you buy in a store that doesn't have the Apple name on it is going to have a Windows OS on it.
