Ubisoft No Longer Worried About Developing Games On PS3

Krunal | February 11, 2008 | News | Playstation 3
It's more than usual that now adays, developers that develop games for the PS3 are finding that it is a complex machine to develop for however, yet another comapny accompanies Activision in saying that whilst they were initially worried about developing for the PS3, the no longer are.

This time, it's the developers of Far Cry 2, namely Ubisoft. Once they began R&D on the PS3, it seemed that the console was made for Far Cry 2, and it's additional features (Harddrive, Blu-Ray drive, and streaming bandwidth) was also a plus in it's development.
After a slew of delays, and some unfavourable comparisons between 'identical' Xbox 360 and PS3 ports, it seems developers are finally getting to grips with Sony's machine. "We made sure we had a group of programmers that were not scared by complexity and had a large console programming experience to work on the initial PS3 R&D of Dunia (Far Cry 2's graphics engine). At that point, we didn't know what to expect."

Well maybe we could get a reason why Haze was delayed, hmm Ubisoft?

Because Developer Free Radical doesn't have the game up to par?

I know who is developing the game, but I would think that Ubisoft would have a hand in the project.

If they had a hand in it don't you think they'd be developing it themselves?

The slant on this article is awful, the actual "Far Cry" devs are Crytek, Crytek went to EA, Crytek produced Crysis not Far Cry 2.

Far Cry at this point is just a name for a series, it's no longer attached to a single team.

Not having known that, I used Far Cry like the source. I've changed it to "Ubisoft" unfortuanately, a bug has prevented the image from changing. Thanks for the inforamtion though VeG.

I thought they didn't have much of a problem before anyways. Ever since the division that developed GRAW2 announced themselves that they didn't have much of a problem. In any case, kudos to them.

GRAW2 was based on the UT3 engine, given that it was tooled to support the PS3 they should have few issues.

Whatever issues they had apparently were minimal at best, seeing as there's barely any difference between the PS3 port compared to the other versions (in fact the PS3 version already had additional content installed).

The point of the UT3 engine was to provide a system for developers to work on that resulted in equal quality across all platforms supported. So GRAW2 was a large success in that area.

Given that the UT3 engine is the largest licensed developer tool for Next-Gen consoles it's not suprising to see those harnessing it having few teething problems.

jmac, man you love to argue don't you? Ubisoft already does have a hand in it. Why do you think their name is on the game?

Sure do. Especially with people that don't know what they're talking about. Yeah, they do have a hand in it. With publishing. They get the game out to the stores and onto shelves and have very little to do with actual game design.

Save your arrogance for someone beneath you. Since you just admitted that they have even a slight amount of influence in the game's design, put yourself in their position. Your money is riding on this game. If you now have a comfortable feeling with developing for a console that has been regarded as a very tough machine to develop for, would you not think it was in your best interest to lend some of this knowledge to a game that you are stamping your name on? Do you understand the business side of what I am saying?

The publishing division and the development studios within Ubisoft are very separate. Think of them more or less as completely different companies, just companies that are tied to one another. Of course I understand what you're saying, of course they want the game that they're helping fund to sell well and try to do all they can to make sure it's good. What I'm saying is it's not Ubisoft using these tools, it's the developers.

YOU BROUGHT UP HAZE as if it was being developed by one of UBisofts developers, like Ubisoft Montreal or something, it's not, it's developed by Free Radical. Now you understand why I said what I said?

I'm worried about Ubisoft developing on the Wii now, because they might do it. :/ We might have to face another horrible Red Steel bomb.
