A recent statement yields that users may be able to download their old favorites from the PS2 on to their brand new, High def ready PS3.
New York (dbTechno) - Sony has hinted that even though the new models of the PS3 do not do backwards compatability, PS3 owners may soon be able to download full original PS2 games over the PlayStation Network, fully playable on the PS3.
The PS3 launch models are starting to go away, and with that, PS2 backwards compatability is going out the window, or so we thought.
Sony may have plans in the pipeline though to bring back PS2 games on the PS3, as download from the PlayStation Store.
The director of the Sony PlayStation Network, Eric Lempel, told EGM in an interview that We havent talked about that yet, but there are possibilities through technology and software emulation to make that possible.
If they did go this route, Sony would likely charge per game just as they do with the original PlayStation games and PSP games.
This model though could open things up for Sony quite a bit.
Sony could offer high-definition versions of PS2 downloadable games on the PS3, fixing all worries about backwards compatability being gone.
We will have to wait and see, but it is certainly something Sony has interest in for the PlayStation Network.

Xbox games have been available to download for yonks.
That said, Sony need to get games like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy VII on the PSN first.
Why waste money on R&D?
But yeah....In the case of the 360 with X-box original games, the games take up a good percentage of a 20GB model HDD (though not so much on the 120GB version)....
I bet Sony will start with games that sold really well and are older....Like FFX, for example....
They'd want to avoid games that take up a lot of space, since they're currently limited to a 80GB (though that should change to 120GB eventually)...
I doubt they'll allow game sharing with this service >_>
Anyway, I'd probably get a bigger hard drive if this was made available. Might be a bit expensive but it would be totally worth it. The PS2 is one of the greatest consoles to date and I think this might be why Sony have taken BC out of new models. So people have to download games again.
Also what about paying for games you already bought? I mean lets say someone has GTA SA does that mean they have to pay for it again. I don't know it sounds like a rip-off to me.
