Advanced copies of the May issue of Game Informer confirm Liberty City is now a warped version of New York, has a Eastern European protagonist--and will have a multiplayer component.

When the Grand Theft Auto IV trailer first unspooled last month, there was much debate on whether or not it was set in New York City. The preview clearly showed New York landmarks such as the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty. However, frame-by-frame analysis showed a ship registered to Liberty City, the setting of Grand Theft Auto III, as well as the Liberty Tree newspaper featured in that game.

Now, it appears that both theories are right. Leaked scans of the Game Informer's May issue indicate it will feature a major story on Grand Theft Auto IV that reveals many details of the game. One such nugget of information was that yes, the game will be set in Liberty City--but it won't be the same metropolis as GTA III.

In news that will not please Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the new Liberty City is directly modeled on four of New York's five boroughs and part of suburban New Jersey. Each section has been renamed--Brooklyn is now Broker, for example--as have the iconic city's various landmarks. As shown in the trailer, the MetLife Building is now the GetaLife Building, and the Statue of Liberty is now called the Statue of Happiness. The city will also have a smaller land mass than San Andreas, but apparently hardly a speck of open land, with each inch being an imitation of New York City's jam-packed environs.

The article also confirms the game's protagonist is an immigrant from an unnamed Eastern European country. Named Niko Belic, he apparently arrives in the US after an extensive correspondence with his cousin Roman, who claims to have amassed wealth, cars, and girlfriends. When Niko arrives, though, he discovers Roman is a poor taxi-stand manager who has apparently become mixed up in Liberty City's multiethnic underworld.

As expected, GTA IV will have much-improved physics over prior installments in the series. Its use of the new RAGE engine, previously used in Rockstar Presents Table Tennis, will allow for much more fluid character animation, which will affect the environments when appropriate.

In GTA IV, non-player characters will also reportedly be superior to prior installments. In February, Rockstar licensed NaturalMotion's Euphoria technology--also being seen in the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed--which allows for complex NPC behavior and realistic NPC movement. Officially, Rockstar is using the engine only in "next-generation titles." However, NPCs in GTA IV sound like a complex bunch indeed, with such things as drinking and speech varying according to ethnic and economic types, according to GI.

Other tidbits in the May Game Informer include confirmation that GTA IV is set in the present day, and will have a corresponding soundtrack. It will also allow characters to enter and exit buildings with out San Andreas-style load times. Last but certainly not least, the game will feature some sort of multiplayer component, but not be massively multiplayer, as some had rumored.

The news was not all good, however. As rumored, the game will not feature any planes, presumably to avoid the publicity trainwreck of having Niko fly one into a replica of a New York landmark, 9/11-style. The game will have motorcycles, however.

Grand Theft Auto IV will arrive on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the US and Europe in mid-October. The May issue of Game Informer should arrive on newsstands in around two weeks, and features screenshots of the game.

So the airplanes were taken out due to the fact that they didn't want the gamers to replicate the 9/11 attacks in the game. I guess that's fair enough.

It's a pitty. I consider it one of the best and funniest things to do in a GTA game. I know many people do so too.

They do that with every game where you can fly planes. ie: Microsofts Flight Simulator.

I'm more disappointed about the fact that the GTA IV map will be smaller then the one on San Andreas. There won't be any deserts, or countryside to roam about in! This time we just have New York city. =/

That is really really stupid that they have no planes because of the 9/11 attacks. its a bloody game. they should have just done auto plane explode if you go near the trade centers if they wanted to do anything.

I'm actually glad the game area is smaller, I wasn't too keen on all that countryside in San Andreas.

is sounds as a cool game the bad think is that the area will be smaller and the plains well never like them.
PS:Man i will have to wait for it a long time to appear on PC and in my country to

Yeah I'm pretty pissed about the no planes. I mean so what if people recreate 9/11 in the game? So they fly a plane into a building, big deal. We can do that already in SA, VC and GTA3.
It'll only be fun for the first 2 or 3 times and then people getr bored with doing it anyway.
I'm also pissed about it being smaller then SA and the exclusion of Desert and Woodlands.
No matter though. I'll still be getting a PS3 just for GTA4.

I hate to say it, but I've never played a GTA game before.
But I'm planning on buying the next one so I'll get pissed about the planes too.

If you haven't played GTA III, GTA VC or GTA SA, then I suggest you go to your local game store to purchase the bundle. After that, I'm pretty sure that you'll get mad that the planes are out of the game.

I can't say I'm mad, but I'm not happy that they're out of the game.

Okay, I'll get right on that. I've never loved that kind of freeroam, shoot people, steal stuff play, but maybe I just haven't given it that much of a chance.

I have only played GTA a couple of times, but it is a super fun game. This one looks awesome, and I might buy it if I have the money when it's released.

I am actually quite happy that there will be no countryside. I found it extremely boring in San Andreas driving from one city to the other. And sure, the GTA IV map may be "smaller" in size from end to end, but there will be less "cheap space"(deserts, forests) and the end product will no doubt be an impressive, highly detailed, busy city with many buildings to explore inside. This was also something that San Andreas lacked. There was masses of space to drive around outside but I never found myself wanting to look around inside the (relatively few) available interior areas.

    Gary Apr 13, 07
Yeah ditto....I'd rather have a smaller game area with more detail and things to do, than lots of empty space.

But they'd better have something akin to Central Park, and some river front action. All concrete and steel is okay, but mix it up a little with some plants. But what i'd really like to see is more building interiors. Being able to go into almost any building would be far more immersive than just running around the streets. I want to ba able to hold up some all night convenience store and pistol whip the clerk with my 9mm Glock.

    Dio Apr 14, 07
Smaller landmass then San Andreas? That's alright, just as long as they create more interiors. I want to be able to enter any building in the city.

As for the plane issue, at least keep the "jetpack" from San Andreas. That's all I ever used.

the parachute was fun too. but what if you could parachute from the top of some really tall building, float down for like 60 seconds, and go skull-monkey happy shooting people with the sniper rifle? or drop grenades into the crowd?

That could be one of the funnest mini-games ever for the GTA series!

It sucks that they removed planes from the game, if someone wants to imitate the 9/11 attacks then R* shouldn't be to blame, it should be the person who did it in the first place.

    Rizzy11 Apr 14, 07
Ahhh damn, no planes. Well, it's a maybe, so we don't know yet.

I think driving planes was the best thing about GTA: SA. I loved parachuting out of them aswell.

haha, like I said, the no plane thing is/has cause a stir. Personally I am not too bother. I dont fly that much as I prefer the open road...

Although I too am glad that the area is smaller as it WAS a pain travelling from one place to the next..

    Gary Apr 14, 07
The planes never appealed to me much, I thought they went a bit too far if anything, always preferd the simplier GTA 3 and Vice City to San Andreas.
