HD-DVD is Still Alive...For Now - Toshiba

Storm | February 18, 2008 | News | XBOX 360 Company
Though there was speculation over Toshiba cancelling the HD-DVD format, Toshiba themselves responded earlier today stating that there are no plans on doing so as of yet. As we are well aware of, Microsoft's 360 has HD-DVD support, while Sony's PS3 supports Blu-Ray, and things aren't looking up for Toshiba's High-Def format (which in turn makes the 360 look bad), as companies are beginning to pick sides in favor of Blu-Ray.

Although there are still claims that Toshiba will stop HD-DVD production as early as tomorrow, Toshiba will use their scheduled meeting on Tuesday to discuss the future of the format, if it has one.
Toshiba, the driving force behind one side of the next generation DVD battle, has responded to press speculation over the weekend, and denied that any decision has been made on the future of HD DVD.
Reports had suggested that the company was set to scrap production of the format, proclaiming Sony and its Blu-ray platform as winners, but a brief statement released this morning has attempted to quash further speculation - for now.
"The media reported that Toshiba will discontinue its HD DVD business. Toshiba has not made any announcement concerning this. Although Toshiba is currently assessing its business strategies, no decision has been made at this moment," read the statement in full.

I forgot to mention that Toshiba's stock has gone up regardless of them currently losing this format war. They are either going to end it tomorrow or come up with a new plan on how to market HD-DVD...with what few companies they have supporting them left.

Their stock went up because people thought they were making a good decision in dropping out. Good decisions are made for financial reasons and if it helps the company profit it helps the stockholders profit.

Another YEAR? Are you out of your *bleep*ing mind? HD-DVD has almost no support now, Paramount is the only exclusive company to it. HD-DVD will be lucky to survive even a month.

A year? Yeah i really don't think any studio on HD-DVD is going to waste money producing movies for a losing format after all this, i don't know if Paramount have a get out clause but they have about 11 months left on their contract unless Toshiba pull out sooner.

If there's one thing I've learned about the big corporations like this is what's concrete today is garbage tomorrow. HD DVD is as good as dead, companies are abandoning it in droves, I heard the factory didn't even wait for the official word before they shut down production. There will be a new statement out in a couple of weeks if not days saying. HD DVD is ceasing production
