In a victory speech after the Wisconsin primary, democratic hopeful Barack Hussein Obama linked videogames to under achievement and poverty.
I thought Hillary was the one on the crusade against us?

At least he makes mention of the fact that it really is the parents' responsibility though.

Democratic presidential candidate nominee Barack Obama hasn't made major claims about the content video games like his rival Hilary Clinton has in the past, but he's definitely been mentioning them. According to GamePolitics.com, Obama's been using video games as a metaphor for underachievement throughout his campaign speeches.

Many of his campaign speeches have contained advice for parents to get kids to "put away the video games." This isn't anything new, either. GamePolitics.com also points out that he's been talking about video games and underachievement in the same breath since April 2006.

In his victory speech in Wisconsin last night, Obama reiterated this sentiment:
quote

I know how hard it will be to alleviate poverty that has built up over centuries, how hard it will be to fix schools, because changing our schools will require not just money, but a change in attitudes.

We're going to have to parent better, and turn off the television set, and put the video games away, and instill a sense of excellence in our children, and that's going to take some time.

I was all for Obama but after this, I just think of all the new laws that he may propose that would affect gamers and, well, my opinion on him slightly changed. I'd still vote for the guy, he's a better choice than Clinton or Bush.

I figured of all people, Obama was trying to target the younger demographic by going to Universities and so forth. Saying that gamers are underachievers and something needs to be done is not going to bode too well.

      HOLD IT!

You guys are blowing this WAY out of proportion. He says people have to be better parents and "turn off the television set, and put the video games away."

He's not singling gamers out IN THE SLIGHTEST. When he mentions the television set, no doubt he is talking about TV in general, and how watching TV is mostly unproductive just like gaming. He's not saying we're all underachievers, but that most americans watch way too much TV and play way too many video games. He's not calling anyone out. Just saying the majority should start to focus on creating a better lifestyle for ourselves. He doesn't say we should stop completely, and if you inferred that from this, you're *bleep*ing crazy. AFTERALL, he expects you to be watching it on TV!

tek, you know Bush isn't/can't run again right?

I'm going to just assume you are referring to McCain.

I didn't plan on voting democratic this election regardless, so It didn't make much of a difference to me.

I know Bush can't run again; just saying that Obama is better than Bush. McCain is a tool; so do not want him as president.

All it takes is one candidate to say "Gamers are being portrayed unfairly by those with personal agendas", and they've won the youth vote.

is 'youth vote' some kind of oxymoron? hopefully anyone who's old enough to vote wont be so naive as to pick his candidate depending on a brief mention of how kids need to 'turn off the television set, and put the video games away'.

Bullshit. I was 3rd in the world for the first level in call of duty 4 for awhile. that's an achievement. Also I get Achievement unlocked on my screen all the time.

In all seriousness it's not our system that creates poverty right? It's not that we tax the middle class and not the rich that keeps the wealth in the country unbalanced. Middle class gets taxed and the poor are there to scare the shit out of the middle class. While thats going on, the wealthy are free to build their wealth.

Oh but wait, there's an easier solution. Video games have caused this problem. Because, they've been around since this all started right?

He's still got my vote but that was ignorant as hell.

      Woah, nice Seproth.
I gained all the achievements within the first 3-4 days of getting the game, I find that to be an accomplishment, especially with school 6 days a week, for 6-8 hours.

It's as they say, the rich get richer, and the poor get...you can easily finish that sentence. Well Obama's main theme is Hope and Change, hope he doesn't 'change' anything regarding games, though.

I just quickly skimmed through the whole freaking thing (god I don't know who the hell would go listen to a 30-60 min speech like that), and it only mentions video games just that once. There's no mention of gamers being underachievers or anything, all he's saying is that parents have just got to make their kids work harder and usually kids watch TV, movies, or play video games when they aren't outside, thus instead of doing that they could be studying. Although on one hand I see how it look like he's saying gamers are underachievers, on the other hand that's just twisting his words around. Now if he didn't have the TV line there, then yes, it would be an attack on gamers and games, but it isn't. So I wouldn't get too worked up about it. I can't say anything about his other speeches linking games and under achievement though since I've neither read nor heard them.

Although, by the sounds of it, he's going to make an already strict school system a lot stricter. All I can do is shake my head and laugh. Quite a few other places are nowhere as strict and they still pump out their share of intelligent and successful people, yet America has to be insanely strict to do the same? I sense that something is rather screwed up with that.

Agreed, they all *bleep*ing blow IMO.

To be honest, I really don't think he was targetting video games, just compares it to watching T.V. But hey maybe when he wins, he'll put his money where his mouth is and actually get some shit done, Democrats have been getting problems doing just that...

Just don't expect them to read the entire source, that was one long read. But yeah I definitely agree with you. To be honest this half sounds like Fox News jumping to conclusions...ok so nowhere near what they can pull, but still, it's a silly conclusion to jump to.

That's what the quote section is for. I don't have time to scour a huge speech or article to find where he said one thing or the other to base an opinion on. The quotation section is small for a reason. It's meant to take out the important part, or at least the most important part.

It's true that he didn't say those words. But, he did imply that taking away T.V. and Video Games would be integral to implementing good values. Which implies that someone who spends much time gaming, isn't striving for excellence. Which isn't un-true. But spending your time playing football doesn't really get much accomplished either, unless you're part of a small percintile of people who can get a free education and even become a professional athlete.

In my opinion, it's just the typical presidential values speech. It's basically just an effort to show his own values and that young people are going to be important to his administration.

        thats a false implication.

        1. most gamers dont strive for excellence
        2. most non-gamers strive for excellence
        3. gamers get turned into non-gamers
        4. most reformed gamers strive for excellence (incorrect assumption)

you just can't get to #4 following basic logic rules.

As long as he says nothing about video game laws, I'm fine with him. I don't agree with everything he stands for, but he's a much better candidate than Clinton.

No, Obama, No, I was hopefully your No. 1 African American Gamer supporter! How dare you call me and my fellow gamers underachievers?
