It appears that Nintendo is following other companies in making the internet pay-to-play. Fortunatly, this service is NOT mandatory. However, it appears that some games will only be able to use the pay-to-play internet.

Hopefully it isn't too expensive.

During a Game Developers Conference session called "Planning the Wii Menu" today, Nintendo's Takashi Aoyama announced a new Pay to Play program. This will be a new version of the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection (NWFC). Aoyama explained that NWFC will remain a free service, but forthcoming experiences will require users to pay a fee to enjoy. These services will fall under the new NWFC: Pay to Play program. Games that utilize the new service will feature a logo similar to the one used for NWFC but is orange and reads Pay to Play at the bottom.

Now THAT was a cheap move on Nintendo's behalf.

"We want it to be accessible to everyone"! They say that then decide to charge for online gaming. Hypocritical much?

If you want to PLAY the extra online games and WiiWare stuff, or PSN stuff or XBL stuff, you have to PAY for it.

Technically the service is already Pay To Play. Plus you have absolutely no idea what falls under the category or how much value it's worth. You have no basis for criticism and what criticism you have is directed at negative assumptions. Maybe it's more than worth paying it? Did you consider that another tier of online play would introduce significantly better titles and opportunities and allow them to bring out better material and offers?

Congratulations for reading it out of context, because you don't f*ing KNOW the context yet!

No you don't. You only have to pay if you want to PURCHASE FULL GAMES from the PSN.

I sure hope they don't do this for Brawl or Mario Kart or Animal Crossing.

Those are the only WiFi games for Wii that matter to me.

You know they'll do this for Brawl...huge money-making opportunities, Mario Kart as well.

This is rather...lame. I expect the internet service for these particular games to be GREAT, paying-to-play and all. As if they didn't make up their money from the controllers...or sold enough Wii's for profit. Hopefully it's not expensive.

Games like Smash bros and mario kart I think are pretty much safe from this because an orange wi-fi logo would be used for the Pay to Play games but both smash and Mario Kart have blue wi-fi logos. I would wait for more Info and see what kind of games that they're using this feature for, they might be attracting some third-party MMO's.

I highly doubt Nintendo will be able to justify a pay-to-play fee. They're complete amateurs when it comes to the aspect of online gaming, and they've never taken it that seriously. And if they do this to Brawl... haha, oh man, that would really crush my last inkling of respect for Nintendo.

Indeed but there's always that other arena called MMO gaming, I doubt a company like Sega would be all too happy with the idea of having to pick up the tab for a new Phantasy Star property. For some devs, they want Pay to Play structures in place so they don't give away the farm.

Odd that most gamers didn't even pay a second of consideration to that, even the PS2 failed to provide free MMO gaming because Square didn't feel compelled to pay for gamers experience, nor did SOE with EQ.

Of the three head honchos, I would think Nintendo would be in the best position to offer free anything on their console. Not only are they over charging for the Wii, but it can't stay on the shelves. They could be printing Miyamoto Dollas by Q3 this year if they wanted to. Well, business is business I guess.

    Nope...bad idea...

Nintendo has been getting money back and forth with not only the Wii but the NDS as well. Is this some sort of strategy to pay off any third party online services?

This is one of the worst decisions Nintendo has ever made. I understand having people pay for online for some games but the thing is: Nintendo WFC sucks. It's not even moderately good. XBL and PSN are years in head of what Nintendo is even hoping to do in terms of online. In fact, Nintendo should be paying US for having us use Nintendo WFC.

Dude, Nintendo isn't charging for Nintendo WFC. They're launching a totally new service that will hopefully be up to par with Xbox Live. The price will be worth it.

I think some people are jumping to conclusions here. They aren't charging for NWFC, they are launching a new (and hopefully much better) online service that they will charge for. What this service will provide, we have no idea. However, if they do manage to provide a service that can hold up to Live (which isn't completely out of the question, assuming Nintendo can loosen up their strict restrictions), then it could warrant a fair price. It all depends on the quality of the service, and going up in arms over a service we know absolutely nothing about is pointless. I'd recommend waiting to see the service, and whether or not it is worth the price, before complaining about it.

All we know so far is that it will be a better service, it will have downloadable content and it will be optional. That isn't really enough to judge an entire service.

And no, games that have been confirmed to use NWFC (such as Brawl) will not be pay-to-play. Nintendo confirmed years ago that if a third-party wanted a PTP system, they can do that. Also, chances are low that Nintendo will use it for Mario Kart Wii, or any of Nintendo's games that aim at mainstream audiences.

    Let's review:

    > None of you know how it will work
    > The introduction of a tier system doesn't even lead many of you to think "I wonder what cool stuff they can come out with?"
    > XBL has existed as a pay service for years and is incredibly worth it
    > You don't know what will be introduced with it
    > You don't know how much it will cost

Summary: None of you know crap about this service. Not a single friggin thing, and yet you bring out the flamethrowers with an extra tank of gas to make sure you dowse it twice.

If you think NWF sucks, then maybe that's why they're introducing a pay service? How much can you really expect from something that's free? Maybe it will offer stuff that Wii owners have wanted for a long time, like voice chat or a more unified game meeting hub? Do I have any clue if that's what it will be about? No, but atleast I'm being optimistic.

I should have made some of those things that you mentioned a bit more obvious in my write-up of the article.

Now that I think about it, this new service is really nothing but good.

How can we expect good things out of a free online service?

PSN? Home? I wasn't aware you had to pay for the PSN or Home, yet they're both good. Oh wait, you DONT have to pay for them!

Can you buy GH3 song packs? Then Sony has a service like this. :3

          Existenz Feb 23, 08
Not at all... People only paid more because Sony added all the extras that Microsoft make you buy in the package, WiFi, Blu-Ray etc... Which pays off, overall you pay more for the Xbox 360 if you want the same deal and the Wii is overpriced to start with so paying for online is worse.

No, that was for the processor and other components, and like I said, Nintendo is already over charging for less.

I agree. We don't know the exact plans are. I would hope if anything, it would be like the payments for XBL. If it is similar, hopefully they add more features.

This is one of the reasons the Wii appealed to me, it was free. I hope it isn't too much, I am still going to get a Wii.

Nintendo Wifi connection will still be free. The article is very vague as to what this service will provide period. For all we know now, this feature will only be used in games that have downloadable content packs, like Guitar Hero, or for subscription based MMOs.

It won't be for MKW either. This service will most likely not be released until at least late summer.

This will most likely only be used for MMOs and downloadable content.

Ok I think some Nintendo fans are too 'thumb-down' friendly here. People speak their reactions and bam, "-."

Some may be jumping to conclusions but that's all we can do right now, just make assumptions, it's what we do with sequels, any upcoming changes...this being no different. But no, our 'negative' opinions aren't wanted, in fact, we should all praise Nintendo for implementing these services.

Meh, getting back on-point, I'll just stick with what I said before, if this P2P Internet service seems worth it, and not very expensive, it's a good move, otherwise...it would be greed.
    • 0
      VeGiTAX2 Feb 25, 08
Or people speak FUD and get "-"

"You know they'll do this for Brawl...huge money-making opportunities, Mario Kart as well. "

Right, yet Brawl is already confirmed to not be a P2P game, talk about being silly, you even ignore yourself with "Some may be jumping to conclusions"

You can always do this one thing, called actually checking before you post, instead of going "OH GOD THEY'RE GOING TO DO THIS TO BRAWL AND EVERY GAME AFTER, NINTENDO SUCKS SO BAD GAAAAWWDDD"

I'd be happy to see Nintendo bring DLC and MMO gaming to the platform, if I have a title where the other ports are getting paid DLC offerings then I feel a bit robbed because of a lack of a pricing system allowing me to buy content for my game. It's a way of letting people have free online play and then allowing for paid experiences as well by companies that have asked for P2P models for content or additional game modes. Nintendo can't force 3rd parties to make free online games, and thinking they'd front the money to cover costs by 3rd parties is just absurd.

I have to laugh at the end of your statement, really. "Otherwise...it would be greed." lol. You do realize you're talking about corporations here right? That the implementation will work just as much for 3rd parties as it will first parties if they wish to do so? That the point of them producing games is to make money, that charging you for games is them trying to produce profit for themselves not for the greater good, greed is all there is in the industry, EA should have taught you that one long ago.

But I've never known Nintendo for that...ever. Their consoles are cheap, but they are making back the cash with things like $90+ for the Wii-mote + nunchuk attachment. The 64 wasn't so expensive with their products, neither was the GameCube. Granted they didn't have much extra products going for them, but they sold well nonetheless, and had great titles.

It's just that they are selling Wiis and DS' left and right, I don't see a point in implementing a P2P system with that much profit coming in. Nintendo wasn't too huge with 'online' to begin with. The Wii seems to target more family and friends direct.

I was thinking they'd add a better online service for Brawl. If you haven't heard, the game isn't running great online, maybe because of the many trying to get games on there, the traffic, who knows, but it's certainly lagging and such.

I said some may be jumping to conclusions, yes that includes myself, I know what I said, thank you very much...read the rest of the sentence, I said that's all we can do right now, assume, jump to conclusions with news like this.
