Microsoft ends relationship with HD DVD

wohoo | February 24, 2008 | News | XBOX 360 Company
Though still supporting the small percentage of customers who bought the add-on, Microsoft has officially dumped HD DVD, saying their position in the marketplace will not be affected.
Now that the format was is clearly over and done with, Microsoft has sent out official word saying they’re planning to withdraw from HD DVD - they will no longer manufacture the HD DVD add-on for the 360 but will continue to provide standard product and warranty support to those 3% of 360 owners who have bought it.

Wow. Only 3% bought the add ons?

But I guess they did what they had to do. I'm kinda surprised they still support the 3% who bought the add on though. Now I wonder if they will go blu.

Do 360 games actually run on HD DVDs, or just regular DVDs? I suspect the former, which leaves the question as to why the add on is needed at all. I've wondered that quite a bit. Although I had also seen an article with a Wii modder who had turned their Wii into a DVD player but complained that it wasn't used to prolonged disc spinning; perhaps the reason a seperate drive was needed?

Maybe I should have just looked this up. >__>

360 games run on regular DVDs, which was why the HD-DVD player attachment was required to play HD-DVDs.
