BREAKING: Phil Harrison quits Sony

wohoo | February 25, 2008 | News | Company
Sony Worldwide Studios' Phil Harrison will be handing in his resignation on February 29th, and will be leaving the company where he has worked for over 15 years. Kaz Hirai will be taking his position immediately.
Harrison has been with Sony since 1992 and has been a core member of the teams that launched all four PlayStation consoles. He has been instrumental for Sony by building relationships with developers and publishers worldwide, and by aggressively pursuing the development of new online entertainment experiences.

I'm confused.... "will be handing"? 22nd was last Friday. Either this article is old, or you've got the words mixed up

KruEdit: Honestly, check the dates on the article, it says 29th not 22nd. I've edited it for you anyway >_>

Both could have been waiting in the queue, and his was posted before yours. Only after stories have been approved does the time submitted thing reset to zero minutes.

According to the update it seems he's going into the growing Casual gaming arena via Atari. If that is the case then he's really going where the fast money is since that marketplace is blowing up so fast it's really amazing at times.

For those about to go "whats so special about casual gaming" it's one of the biggest marketplaces for fast money in gaming right now, little investments in development with huge cash out rewards. Popcap games is a testament to that.

Ahh...well lets hope the playstation brand can still keep going strong without him. If I was making the kind of money phil is I would be retired by now. Depending if I really like my job and what not.

Sony can continue without him just like Microsoft without Peter Moore, he's one guy in a company of thousands of key figures, most of which do more than him and wish they got as much air time as he did, its a sad loss but i wish him the best in his new ventures.

I agree, Phil and Peter were more instrumental at the outset of both consoles debuts, they helped bring it to the people in a nice way because they're both pretty likable guys.

Now that both consoles have a pretty firm hold in the industry what's going to keep both companies in it are great games.

Anyone who slams PR guys is wasting their time anyways, they don't have anything to do with the actual decisions, they're just the messengers. Yes, it's nice when you have likable people like Phil and Peter, but ultimately, it's not what really matters.

Well Sony lost Ken and are still rocking, so what's the big deal of losing Phil? He didn't do as much as Ken.

As slumpy notes, the purpose of Ken and Phil are being charismatic figures in the industry, having the history of success behind them that puts their supporters at ease. If they launch a new service or go out on the limb with a product they have people willing to take the risk with them.

Indeed there are hundreds of talking heads below him, but in the end there's a reason they're not at the top of the food chain and why at this point one of them will not rise to fill the shoes left behind. It's easy to go "oh big deal" and it's another to know what the people actually do in the industry and how humbled a company is when they don't have a defined successor to come up to the plate.

You're thinking Jack Tretton, not Phil Harrison.
