Resident Evil Zero coming to the Wii

gamefreak101 | February 27, 2008 | News | Wii
Resident Evil Zero will be coming to the Wii in Japan during the summer with other regions TBA. Capcom is adding wiimote controls and Famitsu reports that you can supposedly play the game with only the wii-mote. Resident Evil Zero follows the story of Rebecca Chambers and Billy coen as they experience the events leading up to the first installment in the series.

So how many more "tests" is Capcom going to give Wii owners until they give us the next true installment in the series?
Following the worldwide success of Resident Evil 4, Capcom will be giving Wii owners a chance to sample another entry in the series, Resident Evil 0. The latest issue of Famitsu reports that a port of the game is on the way and will be released to Japan this summer. International releases will presumably follow.

Expectedly, Capcom is giving the game full Wiimote controls. While not providing official details, the magazine speculates that you'll now be able to play with one hand, suggesting that Capcom may be using the Wiimote to make RE0 into a point and click adventure of some sort. The magazine also notes that the Wii version of RE4 supported the Classic Controller, so perhaps we can look forward to standard controls as well.

In case you're unfamiliar, RE0 was originally released for the GameCube as the fifth entry in the classic zombie franchise, following Resident Evil, RE2 and RE3 for the PlayStation, and Code Veronica for the Dreamcast and PS2. Players switch off between Rebecca Chambers and Billy Coen as they experience the events leading up to part one of the series.

I don't really understand the point. I mean Resident Evil Zero is a fantastic game, and so is REmake for that matter, but why bother bringing it to the Wii.

The thing that startles me is...how the hell can you play RE0 with Wiimote controls? Unless it was some sort of shooter ala Umbrella Chronicles style. Wouldn't surprise me if they remade Zero with RE4's gameplay...that would blow.

They wouldn't be able to unless they used 3D backgrounds, they couldn't use the pre-rendered backgrounds, they'd have to completely remake RE0.

Well seeing as there's no details about it, I'd say it's a damn good possibility of that happening. Now starting from scratch wouldn't make much sense, especially since they just released Umbrella Chronicles, but right now, I just can't think of another way the classical RE gameplay would work with just the Wiimote.

Ign said that what they mean by playing RE0 with Wiimote controls is as a point and click game. Whether or not that would work well is beyond me.

Yay another port of a Gamecube game.

What next? Maybe it's too much to ask that they actually make something, you know, ORIGINAL?

Why even bother? RE0 can be played on your Wii anyways.

Because despite the Wii's flawless Gamecube game running skills the game needs to be remade for Wiimote use.

No it doesn't. The game is fine as it is. Thats the problem with the Wii. Games have to be made for the Wiimote, which obviously works for games that are made for the Wii. But, as it is, you are inherently resticted because a lot of games cannot be played in the traditional sense.

Fair enough, but for all we know the project may end up better in someway, with a good bit of luck of course that is.

Maybe this is the reason the Wii is not getting Resident Evil 5.

There are many reasons why the Wii is not getting RE5 (same reason why a lot of advanced next gen games don't come out for the Wii), and this is actually trying to make up for it.

Like Nintendo giving their fans consolation prizes instead. "Here's a ported 4 year old game. ENJOY!"

Which is why I said "trying". Capcom doesn't have much of a choice in the matter except to have another division make a toned down version of RE5...which ain't a big deal either, because right now the only reason RE5 looks and feels "different" than RE4 is because of the graphics, lighting, and the capability of showing a large group of people on-screen which I doubt the Wii would be capable of doing.

Personally, I think they should drop any future RE projects on the Wii and focus on their other IP's like Monster Hunter or something like that, cuz Umbrella Chronicles was a poor excuse for a story-telling game. Mostly because Capcom can't tell a story that lasts that long without poking so many plot holes that you just stop taking seriously.

Besides, I've been flaming Capcom long before any of this shit ever happened, so really this constant "Sorry guys, we got bigger shit to do, but here's something we can milk more out of with your system" ain't anything new.

Though I enjoy Capcom's trying to make up for dropping the GCN's exclusive lineup from back in the day by porting a bunch of games to the Wii... I actually don't. :/ Can they, like, make some new games?
