Recently IGN revealed that Mario Kart Wii will have voice-chat ... but that has now turned out to be not so true. Today IGN have updated their article with more "accurate" information.
If you were looking forward to bugging your rivals online or casually chatting to friends, then you will have to wait for a future Nintendo game instead.
Mario Kart Wii's voice chat will consist of a small list of automated statements and responses for you to choose from while playing the game.

In our original article, we speculated that players might be able to use a USB keyboard or at the very least the Wii remote to enter customized text messages. Not so, according to a rep for Nintendo of America, who contacted us today to clarify. Apparently, gamers will only be able to select from a pre-determined number of phrases that can be sent along as rudimentary texts before matches. Nintendo is clearly playing it safe.

Oops, that is supposed to say "text chat", not voice chat. Just thought I'd clear that up.

While it would be nice to with friends, I often don't find myself speaking to others in free-for-all games anyways, so this isn't a big deal for me. Just let me kick their asses in Battle and I'll be happy.
