Attention SOCOM (and Military shooter) fans U.S. Navy SEALS: Confrontation is in the works and it is doing pretty damn good. Apparently a future issue of EGM will be covering most of what appears to be the first full-blown preview of Confrontation...so for the anticipation of the issue, 2 new screenshots have been released and fans will be glad to know that one of them is Crossroads.

In anticipation of the Confrontation cover story in the May issue of EGM, 1UP has posted two new screenshots. The initial reaction has been positive, and the dev team is really excited that the world can finally see some of their hard work. This has also been a huge relief to SealTeam-6, who has the unenviable job of telling SOCOM’s huge, hungry fan base every week that:

a) yes we are still working on the game, and

b) no, there is no new information we can share at this time.

We feel the love. The overwhelming message is that you want Confrontation to be great, and you want it soon. So to address those points, the game is looking, playing and feeling better than ever and we are working hard to get it in your hands as soon as possible. Hang in there, Confrontation is coming!

This is a brand new map, which has a 16 player core area and an expanded footprint for 32 player matches. This ruined shopping center is a great sniping location, and is a hotly contested control point in our internal sessions. The player here is aiming an M60-E3; eagle-eyed fans will also spot an AK-47, a USAS-12 and a SASR sniper rifle in this shot.

Also, SealTeam-6 requested that I specifically iterate this point “for the record”, so here we go:

There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!

Repeat after me…

There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!
There is an option to use classic SOCOM camera! It looks and feels like the original classic camera!….

Is anyone else really disappointed with the visuals? Hopefully this is just an outcome of it being early in development but my god, it looks like a PSP game just upscaled to 720p. The garbage/debris mounds look absolutely hideous!

PSP? That was a nice but extremely exaggerated joke.

Compared to the earlier screenshots, this is some serious progress really. And like Silver Mirror pointed out very well, this is a PSN game. Think along the terms of Warhawk, the content usually makes up for the less than great visuals and this is no different.

Actually it totally wasn't. If you exclude the high poly character models the rest of the game looks like a freaking PSP game. I look at the game, I see Logans Shadow, honestly.

Look how low poly the environments are! It's really hard for me to look at this game and be happy with it being a PS3 game, completely honest. I bring up the freaking trash piles again. They are simply rounded mounds with some ugly ass textures on them, that's like PlayStation 1 techniques to make trash piles, where are the freaking details?!?!?!
See for yourself in the original resolution picture:

Alright, and take a look at how freaking muddy the textures are in the original resolution pictures. Also, why in the world are the shadows baked into the environment textures!?! That's such an old method of doing things, the PS3 has enough horsepower to have fully dynamic lights. Also, take note how absolutely none of the objects other than the characters have shadows! Even the cars don't have shadows under them! What the hell!!!

Well looking at it closely, it does look half assed. Then again, Confrontation is not coming out for a long time so I do consider this to be early development stills just like the screenshots before them.

I see nothing wrong with the game, remember this is a online only PSN download, this doesn't have the budget of a full blown game. I won't say its graphics are fantastic but are perfectly acceptable

It doesn't take a lot of money to make good graphics. Just look at all the capable modders out there doing it.

The textures and gfx overall in those two pictures look much better than the first video I saw. I would say its making good progress. SOCOM never really did have great graphics anyway.

You've got to be kidding, it looked bad in the first video and it looks just as bad now.

Old picture with the same shitty textures and static lighting There's a very clear lack of anisotropic filtering.

Old picture with same lack of shadows for objects or even characters

      NOTHING has changed.

Take a new picture and compare it to the old one. The main difference is the character design....OBVIOUSLY that's an upgrade. Plus compared to the earlier plain maps, they do add stuff to the environment. Either way, it's better to just wait for the final build.

How can you actually say it's better? I'm not saying this game is going to be terrible by any means, but the visuals are appalling. Don't beat around the bush.

How do you have any idea it's better? How do you know these early maps don't have nicer sections to them you just haven't seen? Also, how do you know the new maps don't have crappy parts of them just the same?

The fact is, you and I know nothing about that, the only thing we know is, the visuals haven't been updated at all. One thing people don't seem to realize about me is I only speak when I know definitively of something. The reason I'm so outspoken and abrasive in the things I say is because I don't say it unless I know for a fact what I'm talking about is right and can be backed up. It saves me from look like an ass later on.

          quote
How do you have any idea it's better?
Mostly because I don't really examine graphics down to the T. It doesn't take a genius to know that it obviously looks inferior considering today's standards, but quite frankly, and knowing SOCOM's reputation, the visuals were never really top notch but nobody really cared mostly because of the gameplay it delivered. Sure, I'm being optimistic and stabbing in the dark saying so but there's really no doubt in my mind that they will upgrade the visuals, I really don't see a reason why they wouldn't keep up with today's standards.

Another thing you gotta notice that the hype of the game doesn't come from the visuals, the hype ALWAYS came from the online content. A reason for these early screenshots could be some sort of reinforcement to assure fans that the game is still in the works, since there has barely been any released info in like for *bleep*ing ever.

I'm a graphics artist and a big time PC gamer with a sick rig that puts console game counterparts to shame. So I know a lot about graphics and as such pay a lot of attention too.

I agree, the only thing good about the graphics are the character models, everything else looks like a mid-range PS2 game. Even Time Crisis 4 was better, and THAT game was trash.
