Well...Maybe they aren't using the PS3 completely to conjure up a new robot to rule us all but one can never be to sure now a day. Looks like the Air Force though has spotted the Playstation 3 as being something that would benefit them. Not for the games though, rather for the cell processor inside. Seems the PS3 is the only thing out right now that meets the characteristics (Price and effectiveness) needed for the Air Force.

What exactly they want to do with the Cell is unknown right now, but it sure seems interesting for the Air Force to purchase so many.

Via listings discovered on the government's Federal Business Opportunities website, it has come to light that the United States Air Force ordered 300 PlayStation 3 consoles late last month. The purpose of the order? Unfortunately, the USAF hasn't engineered a real life Warhawk fighter and is in need of a ready-built simulator. Instead, the listing details that: "The Air Force Research Laboratory is conducting a technology assessment of certain cell processors. The processors in the Sony PlayStation 3 are the only brand on the market that utilizes the specific cell processor characteristics needed for this program at an acceptable cost." The original order also called for 300 PlayStation 3 controllers and 300 PlayStation 3 memory card adapters, though an amendment to the order has now stuck such accessories from the request.

The Cell processor is indeed an excellent example of the possible future of multi-core computing. Though PC-CPUs from AMD and Intel are running 4-cores these days, the Cell Processor's 9-core architecture (8-processing cores, 1-management core) is a rather different animal derived from somewhat more forward looking computer science. Multi-core computing along these lines is loosely thought to be a prerequisite for next-generation artificial intelligence, though whether the Air Force is hoping to build a Skynet system on a fleet of PS3s or is experimenting with much more benign topics remains unknown. Its also possible the USAF is simply out to get some Blu-ray action going on now that the format war is decided.

So they're not actually Creating Artificial Inteligence with the help of the PS3?

No one really knows what they are using the Cell Processor for. People believe though that the power of the cell (having 9 cores) is the future of computing compared to the 2-4 corers of today's computers. With the amount of cores the cell has it is believed it could be used to form AI like never before.

On a vaguely similar topic, on one of the current British Army recruitment adverts, one guy is clearly using a 360 controller to control a miniture spy helecopter.

    360 vs PS3..UK vs USA @_@?

    Isn't the PS3 a bit cheap? Considering they're a military organisation...

It's the CELL Processor, this isn't like it's the first time a huge organization has been fascinated at the Processor.
