iPod Hacks takes a look at the iPhone's specifications and examines exactly why Apple's foray into the portable gaming market may very well create a capable new rival for both Sony and Nintendo. The full comparison can be found at the source link below. It's important to note that the device specifications listed also apply to the iPod touch.

How long until we see Crysis, pictured, on the iPhone?

The Sony PSP and the Nintendo DS are the only platforms of note for gaming on the go. They're great devices with a huge number of excellent titles for each. The PSP is notable for its high resolution screen and powerful chipset while the DS is praised for its innovative touch-screen interface. How can a phone compete with these platforms when it comes to quality games? Games on phones suck, right? Let's take a look at a few basic specs of these devices.

Did you look at the specifications? The iPhone runs circles around both the PSP and DS (surprising, given that it's "just a phone"). All it needs now is high profile developers dedicated to bringing quality games to the device.

Meh. I'm not the person who'd play a game on my iTouch.

Mostly around the Nintendo DS which is relying on Touchscreen for the innovation part. I see a lot of casual gaming potential here, especially with the accelometer and touchscreen combined. Still, you're very limited due to the lack of buttons or anything like that to casual games. All in all, this is definetly gonna make a hit in the Gaming market, but it's nowhere near a substitute for either handheld system.

Nothing can beat the PSP until PSP2 in the handheld spectrum. Case Closed.

Here's why. The specs of the iPhone might be nice but the lack of control just kills it. I mean I don't want my screen to have on-screen controls and take up precious space for the beautiful game. Plus putting your fingers on the screen just kills the whole meaning of a video game, the fact that you are looking at it and constantly sticking your finger in front of it just blows.

Like that 3D space shooter you showed Xenc, where he was shooting by clicking anywhere, yeah, that worked REAL well. You can't see anything when you do it.

The iPhone will be nice for quirky and "innovative" games but that's about it as far as I'm concerned.

OMG it's the NGage all over again! Kidding. Are Apple going to make games them self or will it just be a chance for other companys to grap onto this.

I don't think the iPhone will ever be more popular then PSP and DS for gaming.

I don't think it will be either, mostly because the iphone isn't a gaming console... its a mini-computer. PSP and DS are portable consoles that specialize in playing games.

Maybe it could be decent in games, but it probably wouldn't be as good as some other things. Such as DS, PSP, and some even non-handheld things.
