Grand Theft Auto-type MMO is "very doable" says Rockstar

In an interview with Electronic Gaming Monthly, Rockstar founder Sam Houser talked about the idea of a Grand Theft Auto-type MMO. He seems to think it is an intriguing idea, saying “it’s definitely something that we’re very keen to explore."

It seems like the idea of turning established franchises into MMOs is what everyone is thinking about these days, with the idea being contemplated for Call of Duty by Activision’s CEO and now by Rockstar’s founder. However, I think Grand Theft Auto is much more suited to a massively multiplayer world, and it could make for an insane, awesome game. It may just be an idea right now, but I hope Rockstar decides to pursue it.

    Of course this is doable... There is one coming the the PC its called APB and its made by the inventor of GTA David Jones, so yeah if you want MMOGTA get APB when it comes out later this year.

    I have been waiting for APB on the 360 since about 2005 I think that an MMO GTA style game would be my perfect genre. APB could just be the start...

    That'd game would be awesome.

    And I totally believe they could do it, after playing GTA with the multiplayer mod ( what was it multi-theft auto or something?)

    BTW if you guys haven't tried that, its pretty fun.

    I'd love it but the problem I see with anything like this is. What stops people from just blowing the shit out of everything and killing eachother all the time.

    It would just turn into one huge online third person shooter.
    Unless you had specfic PVP areas of course.

    Guild system... Or gangs as you will in MMO's you have guilds and these guilds are a form of factions within the game, some guilds can form rivalries but its not a case of, oh i hate him i'll kill him now, it all works on an overt basis, if you make yourself overt that means anyone in the world can choose to attack you, now this is where strategy and power balance would come in, since if its too easy then someone will come by and pop you and all your gang members without dying, so there would need to be a lot of tweaking but it is possible.

    If they do this they need to take there time on it. Im sure it would easily be a success tho.
