With Final Fantasy XIII getting closer to the completion of it's development day by day an interesting article has surfaced the Internet, talking about how Square Enix is betting on the PS3.

Currently the PS3 in the RPG genre is pretty weak and does not have many exclusive or RPG games in it's library, but the Playstation 3 has a huge wave of RPG's coming it's way. Here is a list of what to expect on the PS3 in the near future:

1. Kingdom Hearts III
2. Final Fantasy XIII
3. Final Fantasy Versus XIII
4. New Dragon Quest
5. Star Ocean 4

These are only Square Enix RPG's.

And there is much more but I won't list many that have yet to be confirmed, but moving on with the article. The author of the article speaks of how FFXIII will remain PS3 exclusive because of the Crystal Tools Engine which is designed primarily for the PS3. It is said to allow CGI to run in real time, meaning playing the game will be as if it's a CGI movie. Plus it said that the Crystal Tools Engine has been focused in many ways on the PS3 that to port a game that's designed with it is not in the developers short term sights. Most RPG's being created by Square Enix on the Xbox 360 are developed on the over used Unreal Engine 3 which shows that the Xbox 360 does not warrant Square Enix's trust to bring a A+ RPG to the Xbox 360.

The author continues on by saying that by the time the games on the PS3 is released, PS3 will be the dominant format.

To take this argument through to its natural conclusion: if Square Enix is the messiah of RPGs and they’re betting on PS3, then Sony’s machine should ultimately be considered the console of choice for the genre’s fans.

Now there is only one thing left to do: see Final Fantasy XIII in action.

Dragon Quest IX is on the DS, not the PS3, and never will be.

    And KH3 doesn't even exist.

Yes, actually. It does. It just hasn't been mentioned, like, at all. There are some videos on YouTube...

I know exactly what you're talking about, the trailers at the end of KH2 & KH2 Final Mix. That's not KH3, it's KH: Birth By Sleep, a prequel being released for the PSP.

I love ITANI so *bleep*ing much. His intelligent, nonbiased approach to gamegrep is so wonderful to read. Keep it up, man. Keep it up.

Do I need to like, add sarcasm tags or are there people that genuinely love Sony so much they see nothing wrong with ITANI's articles?

Kingdom Hearts 3 has not been announced never mind confirmed as a PS3 exclusive.

And to be honest, Square haven't made an 'A+' game since Final Fantasy IX.

You've obviously not played or been attracted to FFX or FFXII. The latter some may argue, but as the moderator of both these forums, I can tell you that they're active till this day and they are certainly A+ games.

It's fan opinion going on, I could say EA hasn't produced a decent FIFA since 03 and people could go up and down about it and it wouldn't make a bit of difference.

I've played both. Neither were 'A+'.

If I had to give them gradings it would be a C+ for FFX and a B+ for FFXII.

well i think square's game sales would disagree they haven't made a A+ game in years. its also quite possible the ps3 will see a dragon quest game, the Wii has got a dragon quest swords so i don't see why the ps3 won't get a game

Square haven't exactly had roaring successful sales in the last few years. Heck, some of their recent games have sold downright poorly.
And most of the recent games that HAVE sold well have ended up with mixed reviews... FFX-2, FF: DoC, FFXII, KHII, etc.

Many fans buy Squeenix's games in the hope that they will be fantastic. Yet even if the game isn't fantastic, the fans will still go out and buy their next game. As much as I hate to admit it, I've done that myself on a few occasions.

A bit of education in the post would have been nice to see.

"Most RPG's being created by Square Enix on the Xbox 360 are developed on the over used Unreal Engine 3 which shows that the Xbox 360 does not warrant Square Enix's trust to bring a A+ RPG to the Xbox 360."

Unreal Engine 3 is an SDK designed for next-gen development, it was sold as that when it was going around shows like TGS, E3, DICE and so on. The ease of use and cut in development cost makes it an effective choice for companies that want to produce titles without breaking the bank doing so. The amount of publishers that licensed the tool was huge as a result because it was effective in that manner.

Discounting a functional engine and SDK simply because it's been accepted by the industry as an effective platform to produce titles on is a bit childish to say the least. Despite what fanatics may desire, companies aren't going to risk closing up shop just to tell you they spent their annual budget making one title and that they might not even make up the cost of that title at all. Odd, if it's such a cheap engine why is it that Sony openly embraced UE3 when it debuted on PS3 hardware?

A little less fan injection, a little more common sense.

On top of this Taku Murata makes note from GDC that Crystal Tools have already been finalized around the 360 and PS3. -_-:

"1UP: Crystal Tools encompasses everything except handheld and mobile games. Do you think there's a need for a similar sort of framework for these platforms?

TM: Well, Crystal Tools was mainly designed for large-scale development. That's why it targets PS3 and 360 -- systems where large volumes of data are used. For smaller systems, something like this wouldn't really be necessary. The tool is usable, but we don't have the libraries in place for portable systems and don't really see the need to go in that direction."

In general it's painful to look at this posting.

Second response: "I don't see what can drive that many consoles off shelves."
First response: "WHOA! KH3! Off to the store I go to buy a PS3!"

    My addiction to Kingdom Hearts is a sever weakpoint. I bought a PS2 entirely for it, and now I will shill out $500 for KH3... ;__;

Should probably hold fire for right now.

You know seeing as it's not been announced as a PS3 game, never mind an exclusive.

But it is 99% likely to be PS3 exclusive >_>

Just doesn't seem like they'd go multiplatform with it, not since they've done the first two on the PS2 >_>

I believe the Devil May Cry series was a PS2 exclusive.

edit: -1 thumbs. I must've been mistaken... Can someone tell me what other console it was out on.

There's a fine difference between Capcom and Square Enix...now whether their "Business Policies" are the same or not, that's another story. I mean, right now Capcom like to jump ships between doing exclusives or multiplatform. Now SE have probably done the same thing, I'm not sure...but they've been doing exclusives for each system...which is not half as bad as Capcom's "policies".

X Edit: Ubisoft released the PC version of DMC3. How you play that without a gamepad? I have no *bleep*ing clue...

Funny how SE says that only when their games are getting close to being out on the market. If I correctly remember, SE was saying almost the opposite of what they're claiming now not too long ago.

      VeGiTAX2 Mar 19, 08
Depends on how many instances you can find of it, if it's quite a few (5 would be enough) then yeah, it's probably just a method to generate sales.

"We feel this system will be the best, oh and by the way we're releasing this game next week, buy one please! "

Paranoia works well enough on people, there's no reason it wouldn't be effective in driving up insecurity with gamers.

    Supernouva Mar 19, 08
Although, would it work? One would think SE is only well known among gamers who are avid RPG fans, more specifically, avid Final Fantasy/Kingdom Hearts fans, so SE's claims would only somewhat pursuade them into purchasing a PS3. Then again, it doesn't really matter because they would probably get a PS3 anyway without SE telling them to since most, if not all of SE's latest titles coming up are PS3 exclusives.

Indeed, the only thing that tends to rest at the back of the mind is why Crystal Tools also exists in full for the 360. They've talked at length that developing titles through the new software will allow them to be able to port to pretty much any system they desire, in that 1up interview he even mentions it would allow a PC port, I'm feeling that SE knows a lot is on the table this time around and that recovering expenses is a bit more important now than it was before.

I love how the guy who submitted this story only went so far as to list "possible" Square RPG titles only. Like that's worth the price of admission.

Whether Squeenix thinks the PlayStation 3 is the dominant console or not really isn't that much of an issue. All that matters to gamers is which platforms they ultimately decide to create games for.
