GameFile: The 'Best' Worst-Games List?

Mishtram | April 13, 2007 | News | PC Playstation 2
Matt Hawkins releases a list of games which consists of some of the most popular games currently out there. The only problem for most readers, is that these are the "best of the worst"

He mentions that he us often negative when it comes to the gaming industry, describing himself as such; "I'm a big fan of wrestling managers who like pissing off the audience."
10. "Donkey Kong Country"
9. "Shenmue"
8. "Madden" (series)
7. "Grand Theft Auto III," "Vice City" and "San Andreas"
6. "Rise of the Robots"
5. "World of Warcraft"
4. "Sonic Adventure 2"
3. "Harvester"
2. "Link: The Faces of Evil"
1A. "Kingdom Hearts 2"
1B. "Final Fantasy VII"

Hawkins knows some of those titles are world famous. He knows some of those would go on other people's best-games lists. He has reasons for despising each one.

Shenmue never really sold all that well, but it was a great game don't think it deserves to be on there, as it was never overly popular(mainly because of the dreamcasts poor sales) but I've always thought it deserved more recognition. I'd agree with Kindgom hearts 2 though I really dislike the button bashing combat.

Heh, I dunno if KH II and FF VII are the worst games ever, but they are kind of a letdown.

Don't think I've played any of the others before, sooo... *shrug*

    ...and GTA for that matter!

It would be interesting to see the actual reasons for why he hates all of these games.

Then read the article. He gives reasons for them all, or at least most. FFVII, WoW, GTA, all have reasons listed. However, KHII does not, but I'm betting it has something to do with a mix of Disney and Final Fantasy.

It was an interesting article, although I have to disagree with some of that list. I agree that MTV really wasn't the best source for judging such games.

Some of the criticisms, when explained, are quite interesting.

"The games on his list aren't necessarily incompetently made, in his mind. They are worse: They are bad influences."

Hence FFVII is criticised for the trends it created, rather than being a bad game in and of itself. Of course, it's possible to point out that it's not entirely the fault of the game that other RPG developers decided to mimic it's formula, rather than forge their own style. This conformity and lack of innovation (be it the consequence in games or in social trends) seems to be at the heart of many of his reasons, actually. A shame more quotes or transcripts weren't there.

By the way, it seems rather hypocritical for MTV to post an article that criticises the popularisation of 'bad' products, no?

Shenmue is #9, what?! That game was epic! there was so much freedom as to what you could do. I really don't think Shenmue of all games should be on that list. And FFVII?! they have got to be kidding me. Then again, what does mtv know about video games? they came out with that lame mtv music generator game....

I can see why FFVII was criticized, yes, it changed the industry, but it did not do a good job when it came to making good RPGs in many of the old-timers opinions.

I do have to agree, though, MTV probably wasn't the best news source when it comes down to it.

I agree with Bri. RPGs are overrated, for the most part anyway. Basically, are the listed games those "love it or hate it" games?

I agree that they can be overrated (though they are usually of some quality). Seriously though, since when has being unrealistic hurt a fantasy game?

Hah, amusing guy. I can't see many people agreeing with him after putting FF7 up there.
