Interview with John Koller, 10 year PSP lifespan, massive PSP sales

Guticb | March 26, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Playstation Portable
IGN interviewed John Koller, senior marketing manager of the PSP. They discussed a lot of things in the wake of the PSP's 3rd anniversary. Not much was left out of the interview, and it's a very good read for PSP owners.

In it, Koller promises a 10 year lifespan for the PSP. Sony has historically been very good at keeping its products alive for long periods of time and supporting them the whole time. Sony still makes PS2 games, and only in 2005 stopped PS1 production. Regardless though, expecting 10 years from a portable is quite optimistic.

It also goes on to mention Portable Copy which will be done with a PS3 system, and will allow users to copy a portable version of a Blu-ray movie onto the PSP's memory stick for viewing on the go.

Also, it seems as if PSP sales have surged 85% since last year. Koller attributes this to the success of the PSP-2000 (AKA, Slim PSP) and the bundles they have released it in.
Launched on March 24th, 2005, this week marks the third anniversary of the release of the PSP in North America. The system has gone through a ton of changes since its inception, both in terms of numerous firmware updates that have added a plethora of new features, as well as the lighter and slimmer redesign.

To celebrate its anniversary, we had a chat with John Koller, senior marketing manager for the PSP, to talk about the system's past, present and future. We hit on things like upcoming peripherals, UMD support, system packages and more, so PSP fans will find plenty of interesting tidbits inside. Have a read.

seems like these things should last forever seeing the pretty penny your paying for it, just as long as you take good care of it.

Ohhhh that is good...wait no...I'm gonna have to buy Blu ray movies now? What the shit??? Well that's two reasons to choose Blu ray over DVDs now.

PSP is still FTW with homebrew and such. IMO everyone should have CFW. The ability to play GBA, GBC, GB, SEGA, PSX etc, etc makes this the ultimate handheld. 10 years PLUS imo. =D
