The end of Blu-Ray?

slumpy monkey | March 29, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 XBOX 360
Well it may seem that Sony's recent victory might not be all that good. A chief scientist at THX thinks sony are too late and another format isn't needed. What do you think? Is a new format needed? Or should we wait it out until were all getting our movies from the internet?
A chief scientist at audio bigwigs THX predicts that we won't be watching Blu-Rays for much longer.

In an interview with Home Cinema Choice magazine, he said: "Personally, I think it's too late for Blu-ray. I think consumers will only become interested in replacing DVD when HD movies become available on flash memory. Do we really need another spinning format?"

"In the future I want to be able to carry four to five movies around with me in a wallet, or walk into a store and have someone copy me a movie to a USB device."

Don't we all, chum. It's not actually that far off: 20th Century Fox will be trialing movie vending machines later this year. You can read more about it in the June issue of T3, on sale May 1st. The full interview apperas in the May issue of Home Cinema Choice.

By the time DVD properly dies, broadband speeds will be turbo charged, making downloading films a more attractive option.

That format war victory is suddenly looking a little hollow.

What the hell ? Didn't the HD-DVD just die, like, two months ago ?

Sure, Blu-Ray might not become completely mainstream because DVDs still work. Personally, I don't see much of a difference in graphics from Blu-Ray and DVDs to warrant purchasing a Blu-Ray player.

I just bought my first Blu-Ray movie (Applseed Ex-Machina) and both me and my roommate were absolutely impressed with the quality and sound, even at a resolution of 480p.

Screw downloading movies. I don't want to download a Gig+ movie with a shitty Internet connection. Plus Blu ray has amazing sound quality. Watching a movie in 5.1 surround sound sounds so much better then a DVD, that is enough to warrant a Blu ray movie purchase over DVD.

Honestly, I think the man has a point. I never bought into BluRay or HD-DVD, because it just feels pointless. And I think a lot more people feel the way I do than one would first imagine.

But who knows. As Zero said, it's all speculation at this point.

and what happens if your hard drive get a virus or fried or if you accidentally delete the movie? a hard copy is much more reliable.....now if they sell the movies on a uneditable flash drive, then that could work. I agree that we should be moving away from spining or all round moving parts in our electronics...if it moves then it can wear itself out.

Your missing the point. He's saying by the time that DVD has completely died we will have fast enough internet to handle these big downloads. Thus saying that its pointless to have a new format when it will never be fully utilised.

This'll happen eventually. But where are my 50gb thumb drives?

In the meantime, Blu-Ray is comfortably here to stay.

Besides, like everything with technology, people want to keep making things smaller and smaller but at a certain point it just gets impractical. Like Cell phones for instance. At a certain point they get so small they're too fragile or hard as hell to use. Personally, if movies were that small I'd be worried about losing them, and also, how would you be able to show off your sweet movie collection? A bunch of lousy thumb drives? Count me out.

No but you can get 4 gig memory sticks. So movies would be stored seperatly on a memory stick.

So you go and buy a movie on that memory stick, Take it home and pop it into whatever to start watching. My tv has a usb port and SD card port in it so you never know....

4gbs isn't enough for a HD movie slumpy monkey. Good Game. 8gbs isn't even enough for an HD movie.

We already have 64 GB ones even, probably higher. Still not practical because of the cost though.

Things like that aren't even worth bringing up Catboy. We could totally have flying cars right now too, but they'd basically be small airplanes and expensive as *bleep* hence worthless.

Slumpy you can get 8Gb memory sticks, but even they are not enough 50Gb Blu-Ray isn't enough for an uncompressed 1080p movie with the sound to compliment it, if 50Gb Blu-Ray is gtteing apcked by todays technology, gaming and movies then 8Gb's even 16Gb's is tiny.

the idea of selling movies on discs isnt as lucrative anymore. Now most people download movies instead of spend a ridiculous amount of money for just one, like 25 bucks for a new bluray movie. Even if its higher quality i wouldnt remember the higher quality like a week from when i viewed teh movie, and it would all be the same as if i downloaded it

Hmm.. Downloading Hd Movies to flash drive may well be the future and to be honest I do believe it's the logical route for Movie media, however, Bluray is here, right now, and is already making dents in the DVD market, with increases in Bluray sales being reported on a weekly or maybe monthly periods, the death of DVD may come closer than people believe.

Even if Memory sizes that are big enough to hold Hd content were available, the prices would be considerably high in comparison to a Bluray disc, also not everyone may have Turbo speed broadband to download Hd content to begin with.

    Hmm?

I live in Belgium and I have limited downloads per month. Don't think that'll change any time soon. Does he even take into account that Internet speeds and ISPs are different all around the world?

Also, won't this basically ruin group-related (like families/friends) movie-watching? In my opinion (and I'm sure I'm not the only one), I find it much more enjoyable and cozy sitting in a couch watching a movie with friends rather than hanging around some computer screen.

The mentality of this guy is based solely on loners and those off with good internet speed. If America and Japan turn out this way, fine, but there are still a lot of regions that aren't nearly so cybercrazed and enjoy watching a high-quality movie from time to time.

Its suddenly the question "The end of Blu-Ray?" appears when one person post his thoughts up it

Its hard to predict the future though I personally dont think it will be the end of Blu-Ray anytime soon especially with there sales preditions and profits to come from it.

I have to agree with the above reply. One person will stop watching Blu-ray, and suddenly its the end.
