After years of off and on rumor and speculation that Square might remake their beloved cash cow Final Fantasy VII for the PlayStation 3 with with the company only regarding it as a possibility, they've finally snapped and decided to give in to the overwhelming demand. That's right - Final Fantasy VII will be remade for the PS3!

Attached images are from the technical demo Square-Enix released back in 2005. Source: IGN

The PS3 version of Final Fantasy VII will include these new features:

  • Two additional sidequests that were left out of the original 1997 release
  • A new secret outfit for Aerith on Wall Market
  • Five new secret bosses
  • Extended cinematics with full voice acting

There has not been a tentative date for release set as of yet, but Square-Enix executives have hinted at a possible 2010 or 2011 release.

Hey! This is unfair! I submitted an article on this few hours ago and it was never approved. How is Avalith's one selected?

The fact that it's FFVII is all the proof I need to tell me it's an April Fools joke.

Yeah, definitely too good to be true.

How can the FFVII remake be too good to be true? It makes sense because they've already made up to FFVI including FFT (which has Cloud, mind you). Then they butter us with Crisis Core, what's next? It's inevitable.

There are too many things in the way for a remake right now. Ask again in 2011.

Like what? FFXIII is just about done, they have multiple teams in SE anyways. Who cares if it's April Fool's?

Even if they're close to finishing, the game won't be seeing light until at least the fall. On top of that, Nomura is still planning to hit up the Kingdom Hearts franchise again. So that's another 2-3 years there.

Yeah, USA won't likely see FFXIII until the end of the year or early next year. Still, FFVII is their biggest FF game yet, they know it. They know that fans want a remake, and regardless of what other franchises they are doing...as mentioned there are many teams at the SquareEnix company.

Think about it, remakes (the latest being FFIV for the DS), new FF's like FFXIII, prequel games such as Crisis Core, mobile games underway, a new Crystal Chronicles game...with all that in mind, how do we know if they aren't already in production with an FFVII remake? They know that they'll make a lot of money for it...I'm sure they are just waiting until next year or so after FFXIII is released to actually cash in on this remake.

Awwww, the poor FF VII fanboys have their hopes up now V_V

How mean...However, it IS April 1st. At least some of them should realize it isn't true >_>

Would be nice if it was true though. I never finished th PS1 version.

Nice touch, to have the source being a place that is inaccessible without login detals

Did you believe Square merged with Enix then? That was on the very same day 5 years ago.

The confusion of April Fools makes for a great Internet web browsing experience.
