In a recent interview with IGN, Hideo Kojima discussed Metal Gear Solid 4 (naturally). Same old, same old, right? Kotaku thinks not! They found a very interesting little paragraph in which Kojima mentions his son's reactions to the Metal Gear Solid games. And, well, his words aren't exactly kind.

The best part? It's learning that Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops captures an entirely different, younger market in Japan than the console titles:

quote Kojima
I have a son in that particular age group, the 13-15 year old age group, and he's been with me watching me create the Metal Gear series. But he has always criticized it: 'Oh, Metal Gear is such a s****y game.' Until the point I released Portable Ops. So these kids are really into these handheld machines, and my son is really into Portable Ops as well: the use of the WiFi, the ability to play anywhere, bring it to school, etc. So it seems like the middle school kids are really, really having fun with the PSP.

Ouch. I bet his immense ego is just shattered.

You know I've never really felt Kojima was all that full of himself. It's all of us fans that build him up so much. Kojima himself wanted to move on from MGS a long long time ago.

Should've been named "Kojima's son hated Metal Gear Solid...until Portable Ops".

    The PSP saves the day.
In all seriousness, this is kinda weird. I mean if my dad was the creator of an awesome game, I'd probably be one of the biggest fans of that game.

Its all a matter of taste. He probably doesn't like the genre. If my dad created a game of a genre I didn't like, I wouldn't like it, and I'd let him know I didn't like it, even if millions of other people did.

We probably have a lot of praise to aim towards his son, i mean this critisism may have made the Metal Gear games better, i mean Kojima wouldn't have made Portable Ops and his son could have been asked what was so shitty about it, we never know it could have been "it needs more evil bosses like dr octopus from spiderman!!" that kind of enemy is now in the game lol

This reminds me of the article that said Jack Thompson's son bought Halo 3. Irony's a bitch, isn't it, dad ?

That was to prove that you don't have to be 18 to buy an M rated game. Jack supervised it...

        Huh? Isn't Halo 16+ not 18+?

Jack doesn't live in UK. It's rated M for mature. Which I think is actually 17 though.

GTFO, If I created something, I would want my son to be it's biggest fan.

I imagine this must be like a kick in the balls for Kojima. It would be for me.

If MY dad was the one in Kojima's shoes, he would be going "Shitty game? Ok, when you grow up and have an entire Company named after you, make groundbreaking games with said company, and have a swarm of international fans chanting your name, then you can talk to me...otherwise you can keep your big ass mouth shut."

And what better way for discipline than humiliation.

If my dad had created something as huge as Metal Gear I would probably call it shitty too. Reason being is that he'd probably be spending more time with his work (MG series) than at home, etc. Natural reaction, imo. The fact that he (the son) liked/plays MGS:PO may be an indication that this is the case.

It's like with Shigeru's wife. I reckon she only plays his games because they were made by him, I don't reckon she likes playing games at all. :I

Children don't have to like some things that their parents do as a job or hobby; he most likely has dreams of his own! =D
