Porn advocate group, Eros, and the Australian Christian Lobby group have united in a stand against proposed creation of an R 18+ rating for Australian games. They say that while real sex has been bypassing guidelines into films through loopholes, such happenings for games could have a devastating effect. The interaction that games provide to gamers is the cause for this stir.

IN a rare partnership, a Christian lobby group and pornography advocates have joined forces to criticise a plan to have public consultation on introducing R18+ video games.

Meeting in Adelaide today, the nation's attorneys-general agreed to ask the public whether an R18+ category for video games should be introduced.

Games which exceed the top MA15+ category cannot be sold in Australia.

If an R18+ class was introduced it would allow adults to play video games involving graphic violence.

The call for public consultation was immediately criticised by both the Australian Christian Lobby (ACL) and the Eros Foundation – a pornography lobby group.

"Given what happens with R-rated films, we could have no confidence that the classification guidelines would be properly applied," ACL managing director Jim Wallace said in a statement.

"For example, due to loopholes in the guidelines, real sex is sometimes being shown in R-rated films.

"What will happen if we have R18+ games, which have even greater impact because of their interactive nature," he asked.

Just give us the R rating for shits sake. There is no harm in it as they would only be selling the games to those who show ID anyway so I really don't see the issue they have. 18+ are allowed to drink, join the army, drive, fire a weapon etc. and yet we aren't allowed to play games that are 'too violent'. It's teh most ridiculous thing I have ever heard.

Aye. Conservatives go stir crazy whenever "Video Games" and "Sex/Violence" is mentioned in any way, shape, or form.

They should stop being quite so conservative in Europe as well (though GTA IV got through unscathed, surprisingly)....

It's also to do with the violence. But I mean come on. Playing a game doesn't turn someone into a crazed violent killer/thug. That is unless they were already previously unstable mentally. But then it's not the games fault is it? (Rhetorical question )

Please give us the R rating FFS. It's so shit that we don't have the R rating. It bands us from having several games down in Oz. The extreme christians down here just seem about against everything. I'm down right sick of it. We need the R rating to sort things out down here. So we can play those games which unfortunately exceed what would be on the MA rating.

Man, that last game looks awesome!!! When's it coming to the US on PS3?! LMAO Sorry to hear about your troubles down under....hopefully some intelligent people start realizing that you guys/girls can make the conscious decision of what is right for you and what isn't. I'm totally against censorship in any form....unless it is an adult media being exposed to children.

Adults should be allowed to be adults.....after all Politicians, they're paying your salaries!!!
