Some further details on next week's PS3 firmware update: besides the addition of the Playstation store, owners will also be able to reap the benefits of DTS-HD High Resolution Audio and DTS-HD Master Audio for Blu-ray movies.

Sony America has announced today that the next firmware update will also add high-definition audio features for Blu-ray movies. DTS stands for Digital Theater System and is a multichannel, digital surround-sound format. DTS-HD Master Audio is a lossless codec that delivers sound to movie fans at 24.5 megabits per second, a rate that Sony asserts is "significantly higher than standard DVDs."

DTS-HD High Resolution Audio is an optional surround-sound format for Blu-ray, and when loaded will stream explosions, speech, and everything else at a constant bit rate of 6.0 Mbps. It is capable of up to 7.1 audio channels at 96k sampling frequency/24-bit depth resolution.

Now I'll probably use my PS3 more for watching movies. I have a sound system that works better with my DVD Player, but now I'm betting it will be amazing with the PS3. I can't waint to get this updated.

My sound system is pretty 'no frills' 5.1....It is DTS and Dolby Digital, as well as Pro Logic, but the speakers and receiver (which is also a DVD player) aren't special.

I can't really reap the benefits of this improved sound fidelity.

Nice to see they're improving stuff though.
