Rockstar Screwing Microsoft Over GTAIV?

Krunal | April 11, 2008 | News | XBOX 360
You wouldn't normally think that this is the case, considering the fact that Rockstar will be releasing two EXCLUSIVE Downloadable packs on the XBOX360, however GamePlayer has different views on the situation...

With recent news of Microsoft spending big bucks to publicise the fact that they'll be getting the content, they seem to have been kicked in the back by Rockstar who, along with Sony, have brought about a special version of the PS3 - one that comes bundled with GTAIV. What does this mean? Effectively it means those that want to get the game, but don't have a console and want to pretty much get the console to play the game, will be more inclined to go after the PS3 which will no doubt help boost sales of the Playstation 3 over it's rival.

A big blow for Microsoft? Personally I'd agree... however there's more at the source...
This is a massive blow for Microsoft, who has already lowered the Xbox 360’s price point in Europe, and paid US$50 million for downloadable content in an attempt to lure the 12 million-odd PS2 owning GTA fans away from the Sony brand. Given the money and marketing that Microsoft has thrown at Rockstar, the console manufacturer may have expected to get some support back from the developer. On the contrary, Rockstar has, deliberately or not, undermined Microsoft’s chances of not only shipping a bucket-load of consoles, but potentially from coming out on top of the console wars.

Microsoft is still getting the content, period. Lets actually wait to see what the resulting numbers look like.

How many complete GTA on the whole? Not as many as anyone thinks.

How many download content? Again not many, yeah the same few download lots of content, but its not a huge number.

How many have internet access? Some but not all.

How many with internet access will buy it on PS3? With this deal lots.

I mean seriously download content means something to those that care, those that have Xbox Live and those that complete GTA IV... The rest don't care, and will probably buy a PS3 for this bundle.

I agree whole-heartedly with you on this Existenz, though for the GTAIV franchise, I do think that there will be quite a few people that will want to get the downloadable content.

Personally, I'm hoping that more PS3's DO sell due to this (and the MGS4) bundle that's being released.

So you think R* is screwing Microsoft?

I wouldn't say that they're screwing Microsoft, personally I think they're being as neutral as possible, they're giving Microsoft what they paid for, and I'm fairly sure that money must have exchanged hands here as well, hence Sony getting this. From where I look at it, Microsoft has the better deal, but that's only because I already have a Playstation 3, had I not have had one, I know which deal would have appealed to me (and those that know me, know that I'm not big on online games - though the additional content isn't online stuff... so I would most likely have downloaded it ).

Even if Microsoft wins with the downloadable content.....it will be short lived after MGS4 comes out and with Final Fantasy XIII and Gran Turismo rounding out the year.....I can't really imagine Microsoft outdoing Sony with this generation of consoles. Maybe next time.

@Ekou and Slumpy.....Sorry was just giving a couple quick examples......don't really have time, nor do I care about all of the exclusives to list them. I know there are plenty of exclusives for both systems.....I wasn't trying to be a fanboy, just saying MS has a steeper climb this year than they have had in the past.

I must agree with kik36 about one thing, and that's that the PS3 has the upper hand this year with MGS4, R:FoM and quite a few other titles to be released this year, but one can argue that big titles such as that have been available on the XBOX360 for some time (course by that I don't mean these exact titles, but titles that match the hype somewhat).

However saying that they've lost this war is quite premature. I think it'll be close, I have no doubt that Sony can come in and take the lead, however I'm glad that they have fierce competition from Microsoft. Taking a look at it, it seemed that there was no competition to Sony, when they came out with the PS2, and things didn't change much. However this generation we've seen loads changing, and I must say it's all for the best. I think without Microsoft, the Playstation 3 would most likely still be offline, or an online service similar to that of the PS2's. Just remember that competition isn't necessarily bad

I don't think it's a secure victory either at this point. I agree that the competition is great for all 3 systems, as we are really starting to see some top notch games coming out!!! I still see Nintendo as being the victor at the end of all of this though....their mainstream niche and affordability will keep it #1 for some time to come.

You don't understand, Console sales aren't enough to win the generation, you need a strong balance of Software to Hardware sales, and i don't ever seeing Wii pulling massive Software sales over PS3 and 360.

          jmac353 | April 12, 2008
Not quite. The variety coming to the PS3 with MGS4 (stealth), Killzone and Resistance (FPS), LittleBigPlanet (brilliance), Final Fantasy XIII (RPG), Gran Turismo 5 (racing), The Agency (MMO), God of War 3 (hack & slash action adventure) just mows over one truly awesome third person shooter.

Gears 2 is going to be sweet undoubtedly, however it's not big enough to overcome everything else. I mean come on Curtis, it's Metal Gear *bleep*ing Solid 4. That alone is as big if not bigger than Gears, then Final Fantasy to boot..

there's alot of variety coming to 360 too.

          too human-action rpg
          Gow2-great Tps
Fable 2-awesome Rpg. Its like oblivion but better.
          Huxley- Fps MMO
Age of connan- WOW type MMO
Ninja gaiden 2- Need I say more?
          Halo wars- RTS

Undoubtedly. But the titles on the PS3 that I mentioned are HUGE in comparison to the ones coming to the 360 Slumpy. Like Fable is big, but it's not Final Fantasy big. Ninja Gaiden is pretty big, but I'm pretty sure God of War has consistently outsold it. Then Gran Turismo which is just *bleep*ing enormous. I also happen to think that LittleBigPlanet is going to be a priceless exclusive on the level of brilliance of Portal.

Hmm. Yes all fine and well. Nut what is stopping retailers making their own 360 bundles? PLay.com has already made a 360 bundle.

Sorry, Im too lazy to read the article. But yeah it proves my point, In that it wont make that much of a difference if retailers make their own bundles also, Presumable for cheaper too.

I doubt a package deal is going to influence what people buy.

I just can't picture this scenario.

Consumer-"Gee, I really like GTA maybe it's time to go next gen in order to play said GTA game"
Clerk-"Which system will you be purchasing sir?"
Consumer-"Well, I don't rightly know. What would you recommend?"
Clerk-"Well sir, The Xbox version will have exclusive content."
Consumer-"That sounds great in all. But, I can't help noticing that PS3 GTA bundle right there."
Clerk-"Oh yes, that PS3 comes with GTA packaged inside."
Consumer-"I'll take that...DLC sounds great and all but with this I only have to pick up once box."

A bit exaggerated I know. But package deals are basically just a small savings and it removes a small step.

        Yeah, I know.

My point is you save like $20 total. It's not really much when your talking about spending $500.

Overall I'm saying it's really not a big deal.

Now if this were the holidays it'd be a different story...Parents buying gifts for their children would take all the shortcuts and savings they could.

Its a big deal, there are many PS2 owners that are waiting for this game to upgrade, thats who the bundle is aimed at... People go for familiarity so this bundle is perfect for a PS2 owner looking for an upgrade.

I don't think its so much about the money you save. Package deals are never bundled with a game that isn't extremely popular. I'm talking widely, commercially popular, reaching the people outside the hardcore crowd. A lot of people wait around until that one huge game is available to make the purchase of the console itself. For someone who was always planning on getting the console anyway, saving even 20 bucks is worth it. Look at the GT5 Prologue bundle's success. The internet is on fire waiting for the MGS4 bundle. I'm sure this GTA IV bundle will have the same effect.

    Final Blade | April 11, 2008
Looks like Sony just retaliated with a fierce strike to MS.

Lets face it the PS3 with this bundle is the cheapest of any bundles, that even MS can't match. Like its been said there is 15 million PS2 owners just waiting to upgrade for this game and MGS4, this is possible the best idea Sony ever did to steal away any console sales.

However MS will end up having more Software sales in the end, but i think this will prove beneficial to Sony.

And lets me honest here, MS only did the 50 million deal cause they know how Big the game is and how many PS2 owners are waiting for game. They did this cause they were sorta scared and trying to one-up Sony. Seems like it backed fired, according to the article.

Slumpy read the article next time.

Who are these PS2 owners, I had a PS2 and I'm not waiting for GTA:IV to come out to buy a PS3, I'm buying GTA:IV for 360. Not everybody is a fanboy that sticks to one company.

That said, my mom wants to buy a PS3 as a bluray player (she doesn't play video games, go figure) and I'll have to talk her into getting the GTA:IV bundle so I can play it at her house.

That's because you're a fairly hardcore gamer Deadman, that's the reason what he said doesn't apply to you. Final Blade is right (shocker) in a lot of ways actually. A lot of casual gamers grew up with the PlayStation brand and they're going to stick with it.

So your addressing your self as the major? LMAO good one.

Listen there is millions who doesn't give a shit about DLC and who just waiting for GTA4 to come out on the PS3, and MGS4. To think there's isn't 15 million people waiting for this game, when SA sold like 12 million copies is ignorant and absurd.

Just because your aren't part of the 15 million doesn't mean there isn't people waiting to upgrade from a PS2 to PS3.

Its not all about fanboyism, its about whats you like. Like i said they don't care about DLC cause they know they will register 100+ hours on it.

These 'PS2 Owners' clearly doesn't mean you then. And just so you know, your NOT the only PS2 owner in the world. There are millions in fact the PS2 is the most sold console of all time, which means there is a huge PS2 following, which in turn means many such as myself only wanted to upgrade the console to the next version rather than go to a competitor.

Many are like me in that they want to upgrade, but are waiting for the right time to buy a console, and this gives them the golden opportunity. I may not have swayed to Microsoft (mainly due to the games on that console, not my cup of tea), but others may be, and this may be the thing that brings them back onto the Sony camp.

15 million people though? We can at least agree that Final Blade is out of his mind can't we? I didn't even bring up the DLC yet he responds to my post getting all defensive about it. He's a crazed sony fanboy that just spouts stupid shit out constantly.

"To think there aren't 15 million people waiting for this game, when SA sold like 12 million copies is ignorant and absurd."

What kind of ridiculous logic is that? SA sold 12 million so you automatically assume GTAIV is going to sell 15 million? That right there is absurd, especially if you think they are ALL going to buy a PS3. You can't assume 15 million people are going to buy a PS3 because SA sold 12 million copies, that's just plain stupid, considering out of these "15 million people" waiting for the game there are tons who own a 360. None of us can sit here and predict who is going to buy what. You are once again talking out of your ass Final Blade.

Krunal, what are you trying to say? I used myself as an example by saying not everybody who had a PS2 is going to buy a PS3, and you tried to counter that with using yourself as an example as to why most people with a PS2 are going to buy a PS3, then just stated sales figures, as if that matters, people still go from one to another despite how much one sells. slumpy monkey is another one who went from PS2 to 360, oh and half the people on my XBL friendlist as well. GG.

jmac, that's the thing, casual gamers, I myself am a casual gamer who enjoyed the PS2 extremely, and since 360 was cheaper and had alot more games I was looking forward to I bought that.(Krunal can keep telling himself he didn't buy a 360 because of the games, lol)

Don't you think casual gamers are going to buy what's best for them rather than be loyal to a company? You think the average person cares? If there are that many fanboys out there than we need a genocide.

yes, Just because im one ps2 owner doesn't still prove that every ps2 owner will go ps3. All my friends had ps2's and we all went 360.

just look at how many people owned a xbox last gen and look at the sales figures now. Im pretty sure alot of ps2 owners went 360.

Plus if a ps2 owner has alot of friends that have 360's most likely he will get a 360 also.
