Is Microsoft cooking up a handheld?

xsynergyx | April 15, 2008 | News | Company Gaming Tech/Hardware
Microsoft allegedly spent 500 million dollars to buy Danger, a cellphone icon which was working on a device that had a fun interface, flashing lights a 'beeping' reminders. It also had great server services and that it faster than most GPRS networks. GigaOm is curious on the price of Danger and it leaves him to believe that "Microsoft wants to pull an Xbox on its mobile phone business.". With Nokia and Sony on the run ahead of them with portable devices and cellphones, it sounds like Microsoft needs something to compete. With all their previous knowledge and technology, do you think they can pull something off?
Some of our sources got back to us today with the same message. With Nokia’s (NYSE: NOK) N-Gage making a comeback and Sony (NYSE: SNE) PSPs developing a following, Microsoft was looking for a handheld gaming competitor for its Xbox brand. Also, as GigaOm mentioned, Danger’s server approach would let Microsoft compete effectively with Google’s (NSDQ: GOOG) Android system. Microsoft didn’t rule the possibility out, explaining in the release: “Combining these services with Microsoft’s connected entertainment and experiences technologies, including MSN, Xbox, Zune, Windows Live and Windows Mobile, will provide Microsoft with the tools to accelerate its work to create industry-leading entertainment and communication experiences for consumers.”

Well, since MS makes the OS for most portable devices, it might have a chance. But if they do go through with it, MS is gonna have a rough time, especially with Sony.

That Xbox hand-held is styling. xD To be honest, I don't see this doing well. Nintendo has been, is, and likely will be, the most dominant company in handheld gaming. Their handhelds are even getting innovative with the touch-screen and what-not.

Two thumbsticks and a decent lineup of launch titles and they could really jump in and compete.

Correct me if im wrong, but didn't MS claim they have no plans to ever get in the handheld Business?

I think the DS is cool, i always gotten the Nintendo Handhelds From the original Fat Gameboy to the thin version, to gameboy color and SP and etc, but i still think the PSP is better to the DS.

But with that said, my sister will be getting one so i'll definitely play with it, especially with Dragon Sword(ninja Gaiden).

I would not mind a hand held coming from Microsoft. There is nothing wrong with a little competition.
