In and interview with the president of Epic Games, he said that the company will never make a game for the Wii. They said that they don't care about how many sales the console has, but more about the hardware.

Epic Games’ president, Mike Capps, reiterated what Epic has previously said in an interview with IGN, stating that Epic won’t ever be developing games for the Wii. It’s not about the success of the platform to him, but what can be done on it. When asked whether there would ever be a time when Epic would be forced to give in and create a game for the Wii, Capps said, “no, we go forward, not back. It makes more sense for us to invest in the next-generation tech.”

As for why he believes the Wii has become so popular, he says it’s like a virus that just keeps spreading:

It’s a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they’re like, “Oh my God that’s so cool, I’m gonna go buy it.” So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they’ve showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. Obviously there’s a class of people who really love it and enjoy it and are getting into the games but I’m still waiting for that one game that makes me play it.

Some in our forums have shared a similar sentiment regarding games for the Wii (at least this year), but others are very excited about the upcoming games for the system. It seems that in many cases it may just be personal taste.

Capps also talks about everything from Gears of War 2, Grand Theft Auto IV, and Unreal Tournament III to the comics, paying for weapons, and Wii Fit, so if you want to hear more of what he has to say make sure to read the rest of the interview.

He scoffed and bitchslapped viciously. Though his point was taken clearly, sometimes technology > innovation.

I know I'd rather play Spider Man 3 on the 360 rather than the Wii, because the "innovation" that was supposed to make it "fun" just made it worse in the end. And a version that has crappier gameplay AND crappier graphics will always lose out to the more sophisticated and worked out model.

I understand, Epic has a certain ultra-unique nich that only they alone can fill: Sci-Fi Action shooters with rich graphics.

Oh wait, that's every other *bleep*ing game on the market.

Odd that he's taking credit for what Mark Rein already noted a while back, that UE3 would never be ported down to the Wii. It'd probably benefit him to read up on statements by his own people before trying to act like a prophet.

If they're not going to port the engine down then it's a given that they're not going to make titles for it seeing as they moved on from the UE2.x engine already.

    I agree with Seeker.

Why pretend it's recent? It's just someone else at Epic rehashing what they already said to pretend they made a huge statement for the company. If it was something new, it'd be worth talking about, but it's someone riding the heels of what Mark Rein already stated hoping we all forgot already. Which by the look of your post, you clearly did and fell into his perception of the general public being forgetful about things even said months back.

Sigh, I don't see how going a more innovative route is backwards...I mean, if they can truly incorporate Johnny Lee's head-tracking, I'll turn more towards the Wii.

Well, the Wii isn't as powerful as the PS3 or 360 and I thought it was pretty much a known fact. But it seems what I thought was wrong. Hmm...

Bah. I honestly think it's sad that there are companies out there who still think that the Wii is "a step backwards". It's a step in a different direction than Sony and Microsoft, but it's not a step backwards.
Capps just sounded bitter that his choice console isn't "in the lead" of the pathetic consle war.

Tbh, I just don't think that companies explore the possibilities of the Wiimote enough.
Nintendo make a big deal over the "innovation" of their motion-control, yet there are only a small handful of games that use the motion-control for something more than "waggling at the screen".

I understand your point, and I do agree, but I think its just Epic saying its a step backwards for Epic. They're saying they don't care about the Wii's popularity if just developing for it is a step backwards within their own morals and reputation. I completely understand where they are coming from. Hideo Kojima, also in a recent interview, said something to the tune of, "We are in the era of casual gaming, of the Wii and DS. MGS4 has to succeed for the industry to be healthy again." Epic and Kojima are not rookies. The Wii certainly opens up a new avenue for developers, but it also very much limits what they can do at the same time. I honestly have a fear that with the success Nintendo is currently having, Sony and Microsoft may follow the leader next round and have us all playing Wii Fit. I do NOT want that to happen.

Yea tell me about it. They only have one of the best next-gen gaming engines, and two of the best gaming IPS.

      I mean wtf......

        Subtle Demise Apr 28, 08
Yeah they created a game engine and re-hash Unreal Tournament every few years.

Yea, I mean its not like the wii just has the same gameplay within every game and just changes the graphics abit.
