Well, as we are all approaching the countdown of GTA IV people seem to be eagerly anticipating that GTA IV will be the most played game on Xbox Live, current top games are Halo 3 and COD 4 but looks like this will wipe the floor with them all. I will play it online for sure.

Currently, the top played games on Xbox LIVE are Call of Duty 4 and Halo 3. Soon both of those games could be trumped by a little known game called Grand Theft Auto IV. Now I’m not saying that hundreds of thousands of people aren’t going to continue playing CoD4 and Halo 3 on a daily religious basis but, if GTA’s sales on the last generation of consoles is any indication on what’s in store eight days from now, Rockstar’s first major attempt at online multiplayer in a GTA game could be the next big thing in online play.

Grand Theft Auto IV has a huge chance of stealing the top spot, given its predicted sales figures. What will determine this is the quality of its multiplayer modes.

Well, IMO, GTA multiplayer, while enjoyable, hasn't been that much fun. (Referring to GTA VCS and LCS ad-hoc mode.)
But I guess everything would be topsy turvy when it comes to online multiplayer. So, there's quite a good chance that this would actually happen.

Come on, 16 player free roam with fully featured voice communication not being fun?

It sounds like awesome fun, if the lag monster can stay asleep. Saint's Row had some fun modes too but you never got to play them at more than 4fps. I think COD 4 will take some beating online. GTA has always been a single player experience at heart.

Yeah, CoD4 will likely fall a bit, but I'm sure people will go back to it sooner or later, I know I will.
