According to figures released by The NPD Group, it states that the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 gamers are buying more games per year then the Nintendo Wii. To go into more detail these reports claimed that the Nintendo Wii gamers buy 3.7 games per years whilst the Xbox 360 gamers are in the lead on 4.7 per games whilst the Playstation 3 gamers follow on 4.6 games per gamer.

Washington (dbTechno) - According to figures released by The NPD Group, Nintendo managed to sell more Wii consoles than the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined in the month of March. This is all well and good, but the numbers also show that Xbox 360 and PS3 owners are buying more games, despite huge sales of releases such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Wii.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii has managed to sell 2.7 million copies already.

This is only going to grow as Nintendo has many other releases in the pipeline such as Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii coming to the U.S.

This diesn’t tell the whole story though, as the Xbox 360 and PS3 owners out there are still buying more games.

According to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, the average Wii owner buys 3.7 games per year.

This comares to 4.7 games per year for Xbox 360 owners and 4.6 games per year for PS3 owners.

Microsoft and Sony are both hoping that the release of Grand Theft Auto IV will further boost their hardware sales.

It is clear from these numbers though that even though the Wii may be leading console sales, the casual gamers who are buying the Wii are not buying as many games as Xbox 360 and PS3 owners.

The "casual" Wii gamers must be having "fun" with games like Wii Play instead of buying some new games.
In all seriousness, as more hardcore gamers buy the PS3 and 360, this should be expected. Hardcore gamers aren't content with like 2 games for a month.

Well not entirely. The Wii has some of what you call 'Hardcore' games, or what I like to call, 'Games that bring in competition.' Take Medal of Honor Heroes 2 for example. The games online features suck.(Chat and stuff wise), but it has some of the most hardcore people there is.

I mean, if you pay money to be able to actually speak to each other in game, instead of pre typed messages. You must be pretty deep into the game.

Well it's expected. The Wii is there for pick and play games that you can put down for days on end and pick up later. The notion was described well in the recent Epic/IGN interview.

You can play it, be like "this is cool", buy one for yourself and then not play it for a while. That's just how casual works.

Core gamers on the other demand constant stimulation and heavy competition so they always seek new games. They tend to have fewer outlets than video games.

No offense, but it is only a one game difference over an entire year. That means that the average 360 and PS3 owner buy around 5 games a year, which is around one game for every two months.

The casual audience with Wii's is a large percentage of the base, but due to the larger number of Wii owners, the numbers of hardcore Wii owners are probably right in line with those of the other systems.

Well look at it this way its actually 10 games per year for people who own both, or just combined both sales figures.

I myself bought 5 games last year for my PS3, this year more like 8. So i say for me its a big difference.

Yea. I actually have to pace my self when playing games, Because I dont want to complete it all in one. Which I most usually do.

Actually the difference of just one suggests to me that those of us who are serious gamers and have a Wii are under counted since causal gamers probably only buy about one or two.

That doesn't suprise me, as everyone I know who owns a Wii pretty much bought it, played it a week or 2, then grew tired of it. Im not being biased - thats just what the casual gamer market does.

Exactly. And those people have maybe 1 or two games, meaning that to get an average of around 4 games a year, there has to be a large number of players who buy more games for Wii.

Well, just from what I do, I say no. I still only have 2 360 games. (one which came in a bundle) I got my Wii after I bought my 360 and I have around 6 or so Wii games.

Well that's interesting 'cause down here in Aus the Wii games at most stores are about $10-$20 cheaper then the 360 or PS3 games. But still this is interesting never the less.

Meh...Quality > Quantity. I have few games for the Wii myself, but the games I do have are big hitters for when company comes over.

That argument only works if other platforms don't have quality games...which they do.

Not entirely. There are more titles on the other consoles that are rather...average than 'must-buy' or 'quality.' It's just that, pertaining to the article, they are buying more games. Now it's not being said which games are being bought on the PS3/360, but if you look at the 'top selling 100 games of 2007' article, there's plenty of average titles to fill up the slots, including movie-adapted games.

I was really just focusing on Wii's party games, though.

There are more titles on other consoles period. They all have plenty of great AAA titles on them. The difference is that there are plenty of average or above average games on 360/PS3. Where as the Wii has few. Wii tends to stick to the extremes...either being great or forgettable and broken. Granted people are still struggling to develop for the Wii.

The real problem is that no one cares about 3rd party Wii games. Unless they are very good. For instance I own Condemned on 360 I really enjoyed it... so when the 2nd installment came out I bought it even though it wasn't getting great reviews(they weren't bad mind you) but I just really liked the story and gameplay. The Wii really doesn't have that going for it outside of Metriod, Mario, DK, Zelda, etc...

I'll agree with that. Outside of Nintendo, there's not much to look forward to on the Wii. There's good and bad that came with this 'innovative' style, and I'm sure Nintendo should have known that it wasn't going to be easy for other companies to make use of it's motion gaming.

Hopefully by next year other companies get used to the Wii's different step and can get in some decent titles before the next generation of consoles. For me, a decent multiplayer game is all I ask for, really works well when company's over.
