Infinity Ward To Become Sole Call Of Duty Dev ?

TurMoiL911 | April 21, 2008 | News | PC Playstation 3
Fans of COD2 and COD4 should rejoice after reading this article, as there's a rumor saying that after Call of Duty 5 (which is to be developered by Treyarch), all future Call of Duty titles will be solely taken care of by Infinity Ward.
Next-Gen are reporting that, according to an ex-Activision employee, Call of Duty 4 developers Infinity Ward have signed a deal with Activision which ensures that every Call of Duty game will herein by developed by the series' creators. As it stands, development duties are split between Infinity Ward (CoD1, 2 & 4) and Treyarch (CoD3 & 5), but the new deal will mean that only Infinity Ward will be allowed to develop games which carry the Call of Duty name. The agreement will kick in once Treyarch have finished Call of Duty 5, and interestingly, has affected not only the core CoD series, but a rumoured spin-off franchise as well.

I think this would be best for the franchise. Treyarch isn't a bad developer by any means, but I think Infinity Ward would be the better choice. After seeing the franchise reaching bold new heights with Call of Duty 4 (easily my favourite FPS to date, I just love it), it feels like a step back to play another WWII game by Treyarch.

I'm not a big fan of having two developers taking turns with a franchise, really. It tends to make the weaker developer's shortcomings stand out more. I would be happy to hear this rumour confirmed sometime soon.

Completely agree, Gogetenks. You can surely tell when a game series is made by a different developer simply by playing it. CoD3 just didn't have the style I was used to (that and the fact that it didn't make it to the PC). Infinity Ward goes all out with their original game series, CoD, and should stick with it...I mean, just look at the success of CoD4.

The problem I see with this is ActiVision Blizzard's (is that who they teamed up with?) promise made earlier this year... to get a new CoD, Guitar Hero, and a few others on an annual basis.

I seriously hope that they don't deliver on that promise. I'd rather wait an extra year between releases for a great game than have them waste development time cranking out below-average sequels just to make a sale.

Same here, Turmoil. IW worked on CoD4 for over a year, and it turned out great, better than great. If they were more timed on developing these games within a few months, it likely wouldn't live up to expectations.

Agreed. I doubt CoD4 would have been anywhere near as incredible as it was if it were developed in a few months. That would just lead to more repetition, like we've seen in games like Madden. I hope that they just release one when it's ready. Giving each game two years would be perfectly reasonable, assuming that they manage to do what CoD4 did for the franchise. The games are certainly profitable enough to allow that time.

EDIT: I'm not sure what happened, but I editted the first comment and it somehow posted a second one. Sorry.

Personally, I hope this article is true. I really feel that COD3's single-player would inferior to COD2. The only good quality of COD3 was the multiplayer, and COD4's beats that by a mile.

COD3 was not a bad game. Sure, it's not as good as 2 or 4 but its still worth a rent if nothing else.

Its not worth anything in my opinion. I thought CoD3 sucked. Especially how 4 turned out, its going to be a bombshell in the future, IW knows how to develop CoD games.

It's probably good that you thinked it sucked. You know, seeing as what you say is invariably wrong.

Could this be too little too late i mean Treyarch are going to ruin the franchise after CoD4 lol...

Hopfully this is true as IW are the better generators of the COD franchise tbh. Lets just hope whilst 5 is being made they have already started on 6 ^^
