Portal is one of breakthrough titles that came in 2007, combined in The Orange Box with other epic games like Half Life 2. Though people would look forward to a "Portal 2", Valve says they're going to take their time to bring out a quality game just like the first one instead of rushing through saying "Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary".
Portal was a breakthrough title that prompted a lot of people to pick up the deal of the century disguising as The Orange Box. There’s something oddly satisfying about hurling yourself through one end of a portal and leaping out the other while avoiding wise cracking sentry guns. Be that as it may, while we know Portal 2 is coming, Valve is planning to take their time with the follow-up.
“I think that when you hit something like that, you have two choices: you can quickly replicate it and stick it out there - do the opportunistic thing and cash in on it - or you can do the crazy thing like we did after Half-Life was so successful and go off and try and say, ‘Okay, that was revolutionary, so its successor has to be equally as revolutionary” said Valve’s Doug Lombardi.

take your time valve, dont rush, make a great sequel to a great game
Plus I saw back at GDC(I think) that they were planning some sort of multiplayer.
Nothing does a game with a lot of ambition better then plenty of time in development. The longer the better with Portal 2 if you ask me.
