There have been speculations that Grand Theft Auto IV on the Playstation 3 was running on 630p, but recently, it has been confirmed to be running on 640p. So the game is running at sub-HD, just like Halo 3. Comparing to the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is running at 720p with 2xAA(PS3 is 0xAA).

The resolution itself is unsurprising since the game was ported from the Xbox 360, but the side by side comparisons carried out by numerous websites tell a more complex story. For example, in IGN’s head to head, the PS3’s Anti-Aliasing is cited as being the better of the two versions, even though the Xbox 360 has 2xAA. This could be due to the upscaling and post-processing effects smoothing the edges on the PS3.

Sandbox games will never look as good as the likes of FPS's.

GTA IV still looks great though.

The game looks beautiful as it is.
I don't necessary agree with you Donnelly. I think they will be great looking as fps at some point in time, just in GTA fashion.

Eh, like this makes much of a difference the "depth of field" or more appropriately blur shader used on the games tiny ass draw distance makes its native resolution pretty unnecessary. Everything more than 100 feet away from you looks blurry as all hell for the most part. I mean sure GTA4 looks great compared to previous GTA games but it still looks way bad by any means of a modern video game.

Actually that's not true, the water looks decent enough with the wakes and what not but the beaches look terrible.

It's understandable given the scope I guess but I feel like another game engine could have done it better. Oh well, you're not playing GTA for the visuals anyways.

I forgot how I can't say anything negative about GTA even if it's true. God you people are just scum.

If you guys want to see just how terrible the draw distance is, drive towards that one sloped hill with grass on it and just watch all the weeds get drawn in like 10 feet in front of you. Yeah, that looks awesome.

The draw distance is overly apparent on the 360 when you're speeding around and then suddenly crashing into an area only for the building to suddenly become clear and focused with a full texture map applied to it.

I don't know how bad it can be on the PS3 at times but it's nothing new to the series, GTA has always had some form of lag at times. If I remember right even the PC had some slight forms of it in some spots.

Crashing into buildings, is never a problem on the 360. Ive been speeding around VERY fast, and no buildings have just "Popped" up

So far I've had one building "pop up". Didn't really affect me as it didn't pop up in front of me. I've not crashed into anything because of the draw distance.

I'm not refering to crashing because of a lack of draw, I'm refering to texture load times for the system. This isn't the PS2 where an old laser and a beat up disc would leave players driving in a ghost world.

Suddenly crashing is an example of something that happened, driving around the map at full speeds then suddenly coming to a halt where the game no longer displays partial textures but needs to load a full texture instead on the map. By overly apparent I should state that it's pretty obvious when the street is detailed but the random shop that you suddenly stopped in front of is still blurred and then painted in the next render pass.

I was a bit annoyed at the clipping and such, but I can live with it, since the game is good, and the graphics aren't horrible or anything.

If there is a next GTA (hopefully yes), I would hope they put more work into having it run natively at 720p (not 640p) at least....Naturally, I would hope that they'd have gameplay and world immersion take priority over the graphics (as it has been with the other GTAs)

And here I thought both versions would AT LEAST run at 720p. No matter, I only have a 360 anyway.

I don't see why anyone bothers so much. Why don't you guys keep in mind that there are people out there longing to play it in any resolution, let alone 640p? Try to be happy with what you have.

What so there not playing it at all then??

      Standard definition is 480p btw.

        EDTV is 480p

        SDTV is 480i

LDTV is around 240 so anyone on a really old B/W tv is sporting true low-fi.

If people are avoiding the game simply based on that then the world benefits from not having them in game because they'd probably be an annoyance online anyway.

True Vegi, but we all know Enhanced Definition is a completely bullshit marketing term and 480p should still be considered Standard Definition. I call it SD.
