There have been speculations that Grand Theft Auto IV on the Playstation 3 was running on 630p, but recently, it has been confirmed to be running on 640p. So the game is running at sub-HD, just like Halo 3. Comparing to the Xbox 360 version of the game, which is running at 720p with 2xAA(PS3 is 0xAA).
The resolution itself is unsurprising since the game was ported from the Xbox 360, but the side by side comparisons carried out by numerous websites tell a more complex story. For example, in IGNs head to head, the PS3s Anti-Aliasing is cited as being the better of the two versions, even though the Xbox 360 has 2xAA. This could be due to the upscaling and post-processing effects smoothing the edges on the PS3.

GTA IV still looks great though.
I don't necessary agree with you Donnelly. I think they will be great looking as fps at some point in time, just in GTA fashion.
Actually that's not true, the water looks decent enough with the wakes and what not but the beaches look terrible.
It's understandable given the scope I guess but I feel like another game engine could have done it better. Oh well, you're not playing GTA for the visuals anyways.
If you guys want to see just how terrible the draw distance is, drive towards that one sloped hill with grass on it and just watch all the weeds get drawn in like 10 feet in front of you. Yeah, that looks awesome.
I don't know how bad it can be on the PS3 at times but it's nothing new to the series, GTA has always had some form of lag at times. If I remember right even the PC had some slight forms of it in some spots.
Suddenly crashing is an example of something that happened, driving around the map at full speeds then suddenly coming to a halt where the game no longer displays partial textures but needs to load a full texture instead on the map. By overly apparent I should state that it's pretty obvious when the street is detailed but the random shop that you suddenly stopped in front of is still blurred and then painted in the next render pass.
If there is a next GTA (hopefully yes), I would hope they put more work into having it run natively at 720p (not 640p) at least....Naturally, I would hope that they'd have gameplay and world immersion take priority over the graphics (as it has been with the other GTAs)
Standard definition is 480p btw.
SDTV is 480i
LDTV is around 240 so anyone on a really old B/W tv is sporting true low-fi.
If people are avoiding the game simply based on that then the world benefits from not having them in game because they'd probably be an annoyance online anyway.
