GTA IV blows first day sales records out of the water

As a lot of people might have guessed, GTA IV did make a splash on opening day. Breaking records on both consoles.

335,000 copies were sold on the Xbox 360. Blowing away Halo 3's debut of 266,000.

274,000 copies were sold on the PS3. It made 45% of all sales, and was a format record breaking performance.

Based on EPoS sales data and estimated retail transactions 609,000 people went online in one day.

ChartTrack data shows game is now UK’s fastest-selling title in 24 hour period

Data obtained by MCV from official UK industry monitor ChartTrack shows that Rockstar’s GTA IV has become the fastest selling game ever in a 24 hour period.

The figures – based on EPoS sales data and estimated retail transactions – show that total online and High Street sales for the game hit 609,000 in one day.

That beats the previous record of 501,000 set by another Rockstar title, GTA: San Andreas, on Friday, 29th October, 2004.

Xbox 360 narrowly nudged out PS3 in the ‘battle of the consoles’.

335,000 copies were sold on Microsoft’s machine – 55 per cent of all formats sales. The figure is a new record for the console, beating Halo 3’s first-day sales of 266,000 units on Wednesday, September 26th, 2007.

GTA IV sold 274,000 copies on PS3 yesterday – 45 per cent of all sales and another format record breaking performance.

    Wow nice. Way to go Rockstar! I'm glad the game has been getting record sales because I know Rockstar have put so much hard work into it.

    Can't wait to get this when I get my 360.

    Wow, everyone was saying "PS3 will sell more because everyone will upgrade to ps3 and not upgrade to 360 for some strange reason, I also the only info I have to make this accusation is that alot of people owned a ps2 so they MUST upgrade to ps3"

      I think people were saying more PS3 consoles will be sold than 360s. I'm not one of these fools who say X amount of people are waiting to buy a PS3 for this game. Thats just stupid. The 360 obviously has more opportunity to sell more copies of any game at the moment. However, since the sales of GTA IV are so close, the attach rate is obviously higher on the PS3. If I were Microsoft, I would be a little disheartened that IV didn't sell much more, after paying so much for the download content.

      Considering more people own 360s than PS3s, it was pretty damn obvious that the 360 version would outsell the PS3 version. I believe even if the PS3 version got the DLC, 360 version still would have sold more due to the fact that way more people own 360s than PS3s, simple as that.

      Its ignorant statement like these that makes me laugh. First off no one ever said the PS3 would be dominated in console sales in the first day of release. We said periodically the PS3 would have more CONSOLES(HARDWARE) Sales than the 360. Where as the 360 would sell alot more Software sales.

      To not understand how many PS2 owners waiting for games like GTA4, MGS4 and FF13 and Versus to upgrade their machine is pretty stupid. The PS2 didn't have 124million console sales for nothing and even if half of those are waiting for those games its still alot more than any of their competitors have done.

    Nice sales. With the game anticipated so much by a lot of people. I think some people who probably weren't getting the game might have picked it up to see more of what the hype was about.
