Sony Europe's president admits PSP needs more games

With it's low price and mass market appeal, the Nintendo DS is continuing to be the more popular choice in the portable gaming market. Sony shouldn't feel too bad, but I wonder how they can predict a turnaround at this point? Well, according to Sony Europe's president David Reeves, the PSP needs more games to be released for it here in the West. If Sony is ever going to gain ground on the DS, it needs alot more big name releases.
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president David Reeves has admitted PSP needs more games to be released for it here in the west.

Despite this, he did predict a boom in Japanese developed titles from studios keen to follow the success of Capcom's Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, which has shipped over 2 million units in under two months in the region.

"We've seen in the last six months that because of the success of the PSP in Japan many Japanese developers have got some absolutely phenomenal games. They're not Monster Hunter 2G or things like that, but they are in development and we'll see them over here," Reeves promises.

Good Any counsel isn't worth what it is, unless it has decent games to back it up.

Given the sales numbers, there's no possible way for the PSP to catch up to the DS in the forseeable future. This is just PR talk.

I heavily disagree. Out of all who tried to compete in the handheld business, Sony has been the most successful. And if Sony can make great titles like God of War and the like(in terms of quality), i expect the PSP to surge in sales. Also the PSP is going to be supported for 10 years, which means 5 more from today.
      Anything is possible.

I have to disagree with Akira EX. The PSP can catch upto the DS; it only takes one or two games to really push the love of a handheld system (pokemon/mario games anyone?) Sony have been leading the way in innovation and technology with the PSP. It could be as simple as economics; if the price of a good decreases, the quantity demanded increases. DS is cheaper, and although price may not be a factor to the likes of us; different people have different financial restrictions. My mate got a DS over a PSP BECAUSE it was the cheaper option.

Stepping away from price, the last year has seen the PSP getting a plethora of amazing titles. The sheer quality and shine that these games contain are amazing. As final blade said; the PSP is going to be supported for 10 years.

Give the PSP time. Good things take time

The PSP is behind 13 million units in Japan alone. Worldwide, the PSP and the DS stopped competing a year/year and a half ago, with the DS destroying the PSP numbers-wise.

Game-wise, that's entirely opinionated, and probably won't lead anywhere in a discussion. The "sheer quality and shine" can be applied to the DS side too. While the PSP has good games, there are more on the DS.

I love my PSP, but I play the ever living shit out of my DS. A few more epic RPG's and more PSN downloads and I think the PSP could really take over. Right now though, my PSP is mostly used for playing music and using it for remote play with my PS3.

Well, with the games coming out for the DS right now, (eg. Dragon Quest IX, Final Fantasy IV, Pokemon Platinum) I don't think the PSP will catch up, or will at least have a very hard time catching up.

In terms of sales...it does extremely well in Japan. Like the launch of PSP Slim, Monster Hunter Freedom, Freedom 2, Crisis Core...

In terms of games, well I got half a shelf line with PSP games with more on the way and I would've had even more if I liked RPG's. PSP's problem is the price, and lack of popularity compared to Nintendo...in which everyone recognizes a DS rather than a PSP.
