Sony claims PS3 to beat Wii and Xbox 360 in console war ... In 10 years

black doom | May 10, 2008 | News | Playstation 3 Wii
Sony are still intent on a 10 year cycle. They claim that they will win the console war ... in ten years. With the slowly transfigured causals on Wii and harcores on 360, Nintendo and Microsoft might not be so willing to stick to this generation for such a long time.
The Playstation 3 is currently in a definite third place in worldwide sales, although momentum seems to be building for the machine, at the cost of the Xbox 360. But how long will that momentum take to build to a sufficient level to take the Playstation 3 past the Xbox 360, and then potentially beyond the Wii too?

The home console war between the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii may seem like it’s been going for ever, but actually, it has only been going for a relatively short period of time, especially in light of Sony’s commitment to the 10 year lifespan of the Playstation 3.

And now, according to Sony Computer Entertainment President Kaz Hirai, that’s how long it’s going to take for the PS3 to be the lead format. He told the BBC:

“We’ve only really begun to scratch the surface with PlayStation 3 but I am confident that given the long life-cycle we have planned for the machine we are going to have a very good install base in all of the major territories.”

quote
“I am very confident that after the 10-year life cycle we will have the install base that we are looking for and that is obviously to be in the leadership position.”

That’s all well and good, but in 10 years time, we are likely to have seen another 1 or 2 Nintendo consoles come and go, and will probably be playing the next generation of Microsoft machines too, assuming it doesn’t decide to leave the race altogether after the Red Ring Of Death debacle.

Hirai then discussed the time line of a new Sony console emerging. It seems that though the PS3 may be on course for a 10 year lifespan, we will be seeing a successor long before that:

quote
“We need to take a look at advances in technology in various areas, such as semiconductors, graphics chips, output devices, mainly TV and monitors, to see where we would like to benchmark our next generation product.”

From those comments, it sounds as though Sony will make a decision on when the next console, presumably to be called Playstation 4 (get your bets on now) by the speed of advancements in other areas. Certainly at this point the Playstation is as good as it gets in terms of graphical abilities and high definition gaming.

Are you kidding me? Nintendo was here since the *bleep*ing 2nd generation.

they are not talking about how long nintendo has been around they are talking about how long it will be before they have to make a new console because the current is maxed out and done. sony thinks that there systems will wear themselves out long before the PS3 has.

Whoops. Misread "this generation" for "next generation".

I don't know about that. The 360 may very well end up like the PS2 now--still popular even after its successors launch.

It could still be popular, true, but it all depends on how much support Microsoft gives it when its on its way out. Thats not something Microsoft is known to do. The XP SP3 I think is a surprise to everyone.

I doubt the PS3 is ever going to win this generation outright, it's just too far behind to put a dent in the huge sales of the Wii. Though they will definately claw it back a bit once the developers work out how to squeeze the most out of the hardware, the prices come down, and bluray becomes more mainstream. Not entirely sure about this "10 year lifespan" though, very skeptical on that front, particularly considering the rate at which technology is still moving, in 10 years time its likely that disk mediums will be obsolete (including bluray) and everything will be on flash memory.

I think in the long run the PS3 might have a chance at winning, its definitely built for the long haul

In ten years, there will be totally new consoles. Everyone will forget about the PS3.

Much Agreed. It's becoming quite rediculous to keep the PS3 that long. It's going to become really inexpensive soon, like the Gamecube halved since it's been sold for so long =p.

PS3 has no chance this generation, it made too many wrong choices at launch. It's the Gamecube of last gen.

10 years? What was Sony thinking? A new generation would have already started by then.

They probably realize that. They also realize though that the technology they chose should be good enough to last for a while and that constant console launches are draining on their finances and aren't strong times for them. MS has only recently begun to actually make a profit on their consoles; I'm sure Sony is still in the red zone from this launch, and aren't looking forward to another in the next 9 years.

Of course, =). It might be sold more than Wii, and XBox, but most likely not, since the game system will be really old.

Yeh they can look at the 10 year scale i mean thats fine but by then i would imagine we'd have the next generation of consoles by then. But who knows.

I can't believe its still so hard for people to realize what Sony is saying. They have said this same thing for years now. The PS3 will be supported for 10 years. PlayStation 4 will be out before then, but PS3 will still be heavily supported. PS1 was around for 10 years. PS2, even more successfully, has been around for 8 years, and actually sold very respectful numbers during the last holiday season. What is there to confuse?

What Kaz really means when he says this is: "we're running out of ideas for this console. Give us ten years, and we might have something decent for it."

What Nintendo really means is: "we're running out of ideas for games(thanks to us Milking Mario, Zelda and MP dry). Give us ten years, and we might have something decent to make."
      There i fixed your quote.
I was going to respond about the title but iLL pretty much stated the point above.

Stop acting like Nintendo are the only company that milk their best sellers. Every company milks anything that sells well (i.e their best sellers).

Thanks for missing my point. First of all i changed it cause the post it self was idiotic. Second of all, Nintendo may not be the only company to milk their franchises but god damn they have done it for 20 years. The most in any gaming company in history. They have yet to make or take risks in making a brand new franchises. Thats my point.

I and many other Nintendo fans want to see them take risks. Bring something new to the table, instead of relying on their past franchises.

There was no point to your post, you didn't like the fact that someone wasn't riding sony's dick and you decided to take potshots at what I assume is his favorite company. Of course don't get me wrong I'm not saying that other guy had a valid point, if anything his post was even worse than yours.

They haven't felt the need to bring anything new into the equation because they have still managed to keep their top names relatively fresh.

Thats not why i did it. I could give a rats ass what he said, if he made a valid point. But he didn't, thats my whole point in changing the quote.
I don't care if he has a favorite company. It wasn't my point for doing it.

Not really, which games can you honestly say is fresh? Fresh is something i call new, which they haven't done yet.
Many Nintendo fans wants them to take risks, do something new, that shows off the console power and using the Wii-mote. They have yet to do anything but make Mario's, Zelda, and Metroid.
Ask Gothic Girl or anyone else who played a Wii and they'll tell you the same, something new and taking risks in bringing a new franchises won't hurt.

Take Sony and MS, they just don't rely on past franchises, they expand and take risks in making new IP's for their console. I have yet to see Nintendo step up to the plate and do the same.

What risks? These so called risks normally turn out to be another generic shooter or RPG or some other shitty thing which has been done a million other times. In fact if you look at the games released on the consoles Nintendo have more innovative fresh game under their belt than the other two combined.

The simple fact that you keep going on about how Nintendo need to stop milking their games without even considering anything else makes your entire point/post moot.

If the PS3 is going to be out for 10 years, then who's not saying that the Wii is going to be out for a really long time period? Then the wii would progress with the PS3, =p.

This isn't exactly surprising. PS3 is already outselling the 360 in Europe - as DVD dwindles away, the PS3 will seize its Blu-Ray advantage with both hands.

Nintendo Wii is really popular. THere isn't a person that I don't know who doesn't want a nintendo wii. The PS3 having a 10 year life span is rediculous, and I don't think it will ever sell more than the wii's, =p
