Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was released a little while ago, but there was an issue that has now been brought up. Apparently, there used to be a feature in the game that allowed you to shoot fish and even had death animations for them, but was removed since it was a threat for moving a 'teen' rated game to 'mature' according to ESRB. Just to make it clear, you can shoot humans in the game, so it must be a worse crime to shoot innocent fish.
You can shoot plenty of human enemies in Uncharted, but the fish are a no-go, as Evan explains:
We had hit reactions and even some death animations for the wildlife in the game but we chose to remove it. It was flagged as a potential issue by the ESRB and it seemed like a small concession to make in order to maintain our Teen rating. It may have also affected the rating in Europe.
That's kind of crazy, really. I can only assume that the next Sega Bass Fishing will now get an Adults Only rating for the gratuitous violence depicted toward the fish community. We are training our kids to be fishermen with these violent simulators and I won't stand for it!

Shooting hundreds and hundreds of people ? No problem. Shoot a couple of fish in a river ? Suddenly there's a public outcry.
Animal activists would be all over this, if fish were shootable in the game....I can't remember, can you shoot the birds? I think I tried, but they didn't die? I can't remember....
But I doubt anyone would care if a fish died
This is just plain lame.
That's not how it works...
The ratings are extremely percentage-based; Meaning that being able to kill fishes pushed the supposedly already high number into crossing the boundary to Mature.
If you couldn't kill human, you would have been able to kill the fish. They probably just thought it was a better idea to remove the fishes rather than humans.
