The Xbox 360 started out with a bang getting the jump on the PS3 and Wii by releasing a whole year ahead of both competitors in their latest console offering in hopes of quickly garnering a huge fanbase within a year’s time. You would expect with almost twice as much time on the market the Xbox 360 would have easily accumulated and retained twice the sales of its competitors, yet over two years later the Xbox 360 with it’s estimated 18 million units sold haven’t sold twice as much as the Wii which sold an estimated 25 million, or the PS3 which sold an estimated 12 million world wide.

Even though Microsoft just came off a great year in 2007 with the release of exclusive blockbuster titles such as Halo 3, Bioshock and Forza 2 they are now in a much weaker position more than ever this year. The future is starting to look a bit bleak for this console in face of stiff competition from the Wii and PS3.

Console Sales:

So, does it look like Microsoft squandered their one year lead? It sure looks that way, with the Wii already surpassing it and the PS3 quickly catching up. The Wii is a phenomenon and an unstoppable force that is still extremely high in demand. The PS3 is a different story and a bit more complex. It isn’t a heavy hitter like the Wii, but the PS3’s worldwide sales have been out pacing Xbox 360’s worldwide on an average monthly basis when compared to same points in their lifetime.

They say that the 360 hasn't sold as much as the PS3 because the 360 has only sold 18 million units with their one year jump on the Wii and the PS3, whereas the PS3 is one year behind the 360 and has already sold 12 million units.
In short, the PS3 has sold more units in less time is what they're getting at.

To be honest Microsoft have nothing to prove this generation anyway they are already destined to sell more units than its predcessor did, thats a win in my books... The Xbox 360 is still selling well, sure sales have slowed but thats because most people that want one have one, the Wii is just an anomally its a freak no one expected it to sell the way it has and the PS3, thats just selling at a steady rate, the way it is going by the time it gets to the same age the 360 is now it won't have sold more than 18 million... Its all a slow grind now.

It's been stated that the 360 has one target: hardcore gamers. PS3 attracts movie freaks with its DVD capabilities, and the Wii attracts the casual gamers.

    Narrower market = less sales.

I respectfully disagree. The Xbox 360 attracts a lot of casual gamers with the free Xbox Live Silver and the number of hyped-up games they have like Halo 3, Mass Effect, Bioshock, etc.

Now, I can't say anything about Halo 3 or Mass Effect, but I hope you're not implying that bioshock doesn't deserve whatever hype it has. It's an amazing game.

Do you honest believe that the majority of those 12 million PS3 sales are from movie freaks? Thats just stupid. Iam sure there are quite a bit of movie freak who got a PS3 because of it, but its not the target audience.

You know, the 360 isn't doing bad, in fact they have the biggest Library than the Wii and PS3 combined. And better games. In fact Hardware sales means shit, its the software sales that makes the difference. So as far as im concerned the 360 is still on top.
They will end up beating their last gen sales, and like Nikki said they have nothing to prove cause, well, it speaks for it self really.

Why do i get the feeling this is going to attract fanboys...

If no one buys it, no major producers are gonna want to prduce for it (unless a certain company pays an aweful sum of money for a few exclusive DLC content for their console)

Did you read my post which stated my point?
Hardware sales means nothing in terms of how successful you are in the gaming business. Sony has been successful two gens cause software sales where they got billions of dollars on that. MS could end up getting 23 million console sales, but if they get a billions of dollars in the software area, they pretty much made profit and got back serious losses in the gaming world.

Thats why Hardware sales doesn't mean success. If you can get a combination of the two thats even better. But Nintendo is a prime example. They have shit load of console sales, but not alot of software sales, at least not as big as MS.

Producers produce games if the library is huge and ease of the console.
I was talking about in terms of MS success. People need to read before thumbing down.

How droll. Wasn't there an article on here a few days ago that said GTAIV was boosting 360 sales, making it look good for MS? So many inconsistent articles on here. Its no wonder so many people are bouncing back and forth in opinion between which one is doing better.

Well to be fair, The 360 has already got its numbers in hardware.

The wouldnt have to sell any more consoles and they would still get developers.
