Well, this sounds interesting.
It appears the next 'true sequel' (read: not Guitar Hero: Aerosmith) of the Guitar Hero franchise will feature custom soundtracks. So, you and your band will be able to upload custom instrumental tracks that you created. Pretty rad, neh?
It isn't surprising that the vocal aspect would be excluded, since (as the article states) it would be hard to do voice (to text) recognition (even modern software is a bit iffy, especially considering different people have different accents). Mind you, they could have ignored that issue, and not bothered to translate voice into text (though that would require the person doing the vocals to listen to the track at least once, before singing it). That, and the potential legal ramifications of including original voice work, pretty much excluded voice tracks from being included.
Still, I wouldn't be surprised if people accuse others of plagiarism, since likely a lot of people will release clones of others work.....Imagine all the all the 'cover band' versions of popular songs, that would flood the list? I imagine there would have to bee some screening process, or something.
I wonder if Rockband ver. 2.0 will do something similar?
Activision has revealed that the next true sequel in the Guitar Hero franchise will introduce new instruments. A preview of Guitar Hero 4 in the latest issue of GameInformer has now shed some light on that and revealed that GH4 will introduce drums, bass, and vocals.
The preview also reveals a new gameplay element. Apparently, Guitar Hero 4 will feature custom made tracks. Players will be able to create tracks, name them, create cover art, and upload it all online for others to enjoy. Due to legal issues and hard drive space — and maybe even word recognition? — the user-created tracks will be instrumentals only.

Well *bleep* the family! I want to rock out to profane metal music.
Geez, some people think of only video games when it comes to what you're able to do.
