NVIDIA Offers Free Games to All of Their Customers

tallteen86 | May 13, 2008 | News | PC
I read HERE (thanks Naked Snake3) that NVIDIA (The graphics card production company) is giving away some free games to anyone with an NVIDIA graphics card.

I imagine this applies to both pre-installed (manufactured PCs), and separately purchased (user installed) graphics cards.

The Games:
Portal: The First Slice (demo)
Half Life 2: Deathmatch
Half Life 2: Lost Coast
Peggle Extreme

Total Size = ~6.8GB

I've set up a (free) Steam account, and my PC qualifies. I have a dated Nvidia graphics card, which came with my PC a couple of years ago.

Mind you, just because you qualify, doesn't mean your PC can run the games.

To get it, simply click on the source (at the bottom of this article), and near the bottom, there is a button that states 'Get It Now'. Click on it, and let it test your PC to determine if it qualifies. You need to make a Steam account first, if you don't already have one. If you don't have one, simply click on the button that takes you to register for your free Steam account, and install Steam (fairly quick process).

After you've passed the test, you can choose the games you want to download, and you're able to download them to any computer with a Steam account, providing you log into steam with the ID that the free downloads are registered to.

Note: It is for 'a Limited Time Only', though the expiration on the promotion isn't clear, from what I can see. There also may be exceptions that aren't clear.

*Sigh* If only my PC wasn't so crappy. Seriously, this is totally awesome for NVIDIA graphics card owners. Not only do they get extremely better graphics, they get completely free games to test it out too.

It is nice that NVIDIA stepped up to what ATI had been doing for about a year now to kinda please the masses. Too many companies skip out on even including demos with new cards these days unless you opt for the most expensive packages. =/

Thats really messed up/awesome. Im gonna try it now.

Edit: Yeah it works. The Portal demo is 6 gigs though. :S
Found this online: "Whenever you download a game that is based on Valve's HL2-engine, it comes with tons of shared files, that contain data that is used by lots of games. The problem is, that usually only a small amount of data is even used by the game, yet you have to download and store those huge files on your disc just to play a small game.

Portal is an excellent example for that. It's a pretty small game, yet gets bloated immensely when being offered as separate download."

Also apparently this has been on since January? Unless they stopped/started again just now.

Aye, I noticed when I was selecting/unselecting some stuff....Portal by itself, is about 6.2GB, one or both of the Half Life ones were about 3 GB by themselves (or together, whichever)....This is due to shared graphics...Stick everything (all 4 games), and it is only about 6.8GB...

Yeah this offer has been going on for quite a bit, it kinda seemed to act in response to the ongoing offer from ATI that has been going on for about a year now with no end in sight. Better late than never I guess.

Given that HL2: DM has had trouble keeping a crowd since launch it's not suprising to see them pitching it to the masses to keep it alive.

Wow, definitely cool. I already have the games, but cool nonetheless. Go nVidia.

This has been going since the Orange Box was released, I already got my copy of Peggle Extreme through it (bought the Orange Box games separately, oh well).

Still neat, though. It works well with the Orange Box, as it doesn't come with HL2M.
