With North America seeing the launch of WiiWare this past Monday, Japan gets the first real Virtual Console update this week. There are a couple gems in this update.

The first game is the Taito classic, Bubble Bobble for the Famicom. With gameplay that stands the test of time, join the two Bubble Dragons Bub and Bob through multiple levels, defeating enemies.

Next up is a game featuring Sega's top mascot before Sonic, Alex Kidd. This game is Alex Kidd in Miracle World for the Sega Master System. It is the first game in the franchise, and is notable for its Janken (Rock, Paper, Scissors) Boss Battles, where three boss battles fought would be the titular hero going one-on-one with the boss.

The last game on the docket is a pre-Street Fighter II fighter developed by Konami for the PC Engine CD: Martial Champion. The game's fighting system utilizes low/middle/upper attacks, as opposed to the punch/kick systems that were mostly the standard for fighters of the time.

Recap:

  • FAM: Bubble Bobble, 1-2 Players, 500 Points
  • SMS: Alex Kidd in Miracle World, 1 Player, 500 Points
  • PCE: Martial Champion, 1-2 Players, 800 Points - CD Game

Alex Kidd was a "mascot" of Sega at one time? Never knew that. (I must've been like 5 years old then. )
I loved Alex Kidd on the Genesis. Ah, the good old days.
