It was recently revealed that Metal Gear Solid 4 will have 9 hours worth of cutscenes. To any MGS fan, that's nothing. They're used to the numerous cinematics that appear in the series.

But were you expecting some of them to last for 90 minutes? Yes, some of MGS4's cutscenes will be as long as a full-length movie!
And not just one or two ... There are apparently quite a handful of cutscenes that run for 90 minutes straight.

We know the Metal Gear Solid series is famous for its long cut-scenes, but this tops everything! Metal Gear Solid 4, the latest instalment in Hideo Kojima's seminal stealth series, has cut-scenes (note the plural) that approach the 90 minutes mark.

As the approver of this article I would just like to say HOLY SHIT! I mean I knew the cutscenes were going to be long but this is huge! Maybe a translation error

Here's hoping it is an error.

As far as I know, the longest MGS cutscene was the 45 minute one in MGS2 ... But that was only one cutscene in the entire game.
MGS4 has numerous cutscenes that are twice as long - It sounds absolutely insane. I usually don't mind MGS's cutscenes, but it's going to be a chore sitting through the ones that last for 90 minutes, without any playtime in-between.

must be, im doubtful it will be 90 min long, im sorry but i dont
i saw articles stating the cutscenes were on average 10 mins in length, longest being 15/20 mins

      must be a translation error

As a MASSIVE MGS fan and one that has never been bothered by the long cutscenes, I still hope that's wrong.

90 minute cutscenes is too freaking much.

Hopefully theres somthing special about them- Like you can play during them or somthing. Hideo is a master. We can trust him =).

90 minutes? Sounds like a spy movie.

    (Sorry, couldn't resist)

Seriously, I think even for a game like Metal Gear, that's way too much. Kojima might as well make a serious Metal Gear movie at this rate.

    Final Blade May 23, 08
If this is true, I will guarantee everyone that the reviewers will take big points off cause of this. Its a game not a movie. Of course personally i don't care but i can see many many people hating the game cause of this length.

Well it seems this is the power of Blu-ray huh? Uncompressed movies, wow.

    Existenz May 23, 08
I just hope you can't skip them, one thing having a 1 hour 30 minute cutscene, its another getting half way through one and then accidentally hitting triangle and the rest skips.
    • -1
      Final Blade May 23, 08
Or better yet a confirmation of skipping. That can solve it.
      • -1
        Euphoric May 23, 08
Who wants a conformation box appearing in the middle of a cutscence? If your stupid enough to be holding the controller, instead of putting it aside for the length of the clip, you deserve for it to be skipped.
        • 0
          kik36 May 23, 08
As long as they don't make the skip scene button L2 or R2.....I always frickin bump them when I put the controller down lmao
        • 0
          Final Blade May 23, 08
Actually you don't get it, if lets say you accidentally bump into a button that skips the cutscene, it stops the cutscene and a confirmation box appears asking you you sure.

Its a way of making sure you don't skip it. Its the same as most stuff on the computer, or most games out there.

Euphoric...Better a skip box, than automatically skipping it (accidents do happen you know), or worse, not skipping it at all....It is as long as full length movie....A lot of people will likely play through this game more than once, and who knows, maybe they DON'T want to watch the same uberlong cutscenes over and over again, with no choice but to watch it over again....

If the devs were actually dumb enough to make the long cutscenes unskippable, well, I guess you could always watch some TV or a movie in the meantime...

They should make it Start and "Yes" to skip....Not likely you'd bump start by accident....

    Koloth May 23, 08
Well, I think if nothing else this should put to bed any rumors of getting the game on the 360. Unless they want to have to switch disks after every cutscene.

Multiple 90 minute long cuts... I'm not sure what to think about that. I do know one thing though. This isn't going to be a game I can throw on before work and get in a few quick minutes of play time. Throw it in in the 90 minutes I have after dropping the kid off before work and run right into one of those cutscenes. There goes my play time right out the window.

What does the Xbox 360 have to do with anything? Are you guys being paid by Sony or something?

        Koloth May 23, 08
Hah, I wish. No I was just pointing out that the rumors of MGS4 ever coming to the 360 should be over and done with now.

We know exactly why Kojima was complaining that 25GB Blu-ray wasn't big enough now. It is because he filled the ting to the brim with cut scenes.

I haven't got a day of school again till September now anyway so I haven't got the same problem as you Koloth.

90 minutes is way too much. It wouldn't be sooo bad if the story was easy to follow but if this is anything like previous MGS games watching the cutscenes will be just to see the visuals. As lets face it, the average gamer would'nt have a clue what's going on in the story.
I will still watch each cutscene though but hopefully it's action packed and could almost pass as a film on it's own.

I only found MGS2 hard to follow.

Co-incidentally, MGS2 currently has the longest cutscenes in the series. (until MGS4 is released, that is).

    Jaw Knee May 23, 08
Word. 90 minutes my ass. When I'm playing MGS2, I feel like that it's more of a movie than a video game.
  • 1
    iLLmatic May 23, 08
If the game has 9 hours worth of cutscenes, then how can quite a handful of them be 90 minutes? That would be the majority of the cutscenes being that long, which is too long to begin with. I'll believe it when I see it.
    • 0
      Existenz May 23, 08
Just because a few are this long doesn't mean there can't be more mixed into the rest of the game that are shorter say the standard 5-10 minutes of the past games...
  • 2
    tekmosis May 23, 08
I've never played a MGS so I don't fall into the category of those that are already familiar with the numerous amounts of cutscenes. I just saw this on Kotaku and I was like...typo? 90 mins? WOT? Am I watching a movie or playing a game? either way, it sounds interesting.
  • -1
    Supernouva May 23, 08
And this is probably half of the reason why MGS4 was able to fill up all the space on a Blu-ray disc.
    • 1
      iLLmatic May 23, 08
No, if they were CGI, then that would be the case.

        Existenz May 23, 08
Still a shit load of dialogue... Sound especially in the quality Kojima likes it is a very large ass file, these cutscenes won't be silent most of it will be full of dialogue... 9 hours of high quality uncompressed dialogue is going to fill up a disc very fast, i would say 25Gb of this game is just for the sound/dialogue.

I don't mind, as long as they are good. It is the last chapter in the solid snake saga after all.
  • 0
    Xenctuary May 23, 08
That's definitely long! I really hope there's a way to watch them again after you've completed the game, maybe even with the ability to fast forward so you can get to the very best parts.

    Can't wait

    Synergized May 23, 08
Holy shit, you're watching a *bleep*ing movie. Then, it is Metal Gear Solid. Should be good, but I don't think many people will enjoy sitting there when they could/should be playing.
  • 0
    Distortion May 23, 08
We should have a MGS movie, people would go see it and they'd make money. No need for 90-minute long cutscenes.
  • 0
Shadow of Death* May 23, 08
My previous comment nonwithstanding, I hope they don't have 90 minute cutscenes....Hell, 45 minute ones, or even 20 minute ones are pretty damned excessive....

Well, I don't mind so much, so long as they actually make the cutscenes worthwhile, as well as entertaining (and skippable)....

  • 3
    BANDITO ATTACK May 23, 08
despite the fact that this rumor has been claimed as false.. i'll go ahead and say 90 minute cutscenes is pure overkill. i get bored just watching mario go through the pipe on the second level of smb.
i cant understand why anyone would be excited about these long ass cutscenes.
    • 0
      Oogity_Boogity_Boo May 24, 08
Haha, I feel like that about SMB too. Maybe it's my A.D.D., but that 3 second cutscene of Mario running into a pipe makes me want to go for a quick piss break.

    Heretic May 24, 08
Because its like a movie in a game. Two in one.
