One of the backdrops of Resistance: Fall of Man is a Cathedral in Manchester that is in ruin and being attacked by the creatures known as the Chimeras. As US Ranger Nathan Hale, you take part in a shoot-out against the Chimeras, with the ability to destroy more of the surrounding's - the Cathedral.

With the destruction of a place of worship, the Church of England are demanding that Sony Apologise for the use of the Cathedral and the withdrawal of the game.

The Church says Sony did not ask for permission to use the cathedral and was wrong to choose Manchester - a city plagued by gun violence which has left tens of youngsters dead.

The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Rev Nigel McCulloch, said: "It is well known that Manchester has a gun crime problem.

"For a global manufacturer to re-create one of our great cathedrals with photo-realistic quality and then encourage people to have gun battles in the building is beyond belief and highly irresponsible."

I heard about this earlier, they don't even know what the game is about... They were ranting on about a gun battle in a cathedral where it is YOUR job to gun down hundreds of soldiers, i mean the Chimera hardly give the gamer a choice... We should be suing the Chimera for coming to earth and rudely destroying this cathedral and making us go in all guns blazing.

Hahaha, for those that didn't realise i was being sarcastic in trying to get my point across about how stupid their claim is, i mean Sony got permission i mean you cannot realistically model Manchester cathedral without entering it and plotting the structure, you need permission to do that... Also their numbers are inaccurate, sure there is alot of gun crime in Manchester they even said there have been about 3000 firearm's offences in the last 15 months, Resistance has been out 2 and half months this game has done nothing to incite violence.

The only thing that i can see them angry about is the use of the church, which is pointless since if i was planning a shoot-out i would choose a place people actually visit, cathedrals are not popular in the UK religion, well Christianity is barely practised anymore... They should take the publicity since atleast now kids know what the inside of Manchester cathedral looks like lol.

Oh my god *bleep*ing ridiculous. As if in the event of a disaster all the churches become magically safe.

You guys overlooked something. Sony didn't ask for permission to use the cathedral, and when you use something that is owned by somebody else you are required to ask for permission. This is the main reason sony is being sued.

Actually on BBC news Sony did say they will look into it and they assured that they had gone through all the correct procedures, before putting this game out.

Then why does the article say that sony didn't ask for permission, and if they did ask for permission they would have told the church the way that they would be using it and the bishop wouldn't be complaining.

Churches love to lie. That's something you start to realize eventually.

Plus, a church isn't legally owned by anyone.

Just because the churches look similar, doesn't mean that Sony actually (to be honest, it's not even sony, its Insomniac) went to the Cathedral, took pictures and redid it in CG form. They could have simply made a church, that just looks remarkably like the real one.

Holy place? Like the bible is a factual story... It was written by some guys a few thousand years ago, for all we know it is just an ancient Lord of the Rings with less battles heh, seriously just because a building is called a place of worship or a holy place, does not alter the fact it is just bricks and mortar... Doesn't make them immune from an attack in reality or fiction.

Open to interpretation. A church is no different than any other building in the world. It can be built, renovated, destroyed, etc. Oh, by the way, there's aliens in them churches too. We need to get our retro-future guns in there and fight.

And how about them contexts, huh? "Oh, hey, let's run in that church for a safe haven--OH SHI-!" Maybe that OTHER church down the road was "holier".

    Or what about in movies?

Right, sure, whatever. This is just someone being greedy jackass. Doesn't matter who they are.

We don't need to turn this into another "what makes this religious blah-blah-blah so blah-blah-blah". It's just someone twisting their beliefs to their liking.

      Well said.

A Church is only holy if the person in question believes it is holy.

It's like money, money is only worth something because everyone agrees it is worth something. When you get right down to it we're all still only trading for other stuff we find to be of value.

(I meant to thumb you up but I accidentally hit down!! )

    Couldn't agree more.

In their case, "Infernal" would be the most perverse game in history, and they're gunning for Resistance for ONE FRACTION of a stage that features a Cathedral? Yeah, they are VERY responsible.

A church or cathedral is a place of great importance to people.

I can assure you that if a monument to a state or a place of importance to any community, for example if my local GAA was depicted in a wrecked state my father (and several other club members) would raise hell since it bonds our community.

So if you could please drop the 'wanna be cool' thing you seem to be connecting to the 'fact that atheism deserves acknowledgement' stuff (because all though it does deserve the same rights as a religion, you are going into supression of others territory) for a moment to acknowledge that every-one's beliefs deserve respect but much more importantly property is property and Sony does not have the right to use that area without permission.

Lastly I would like to say that I have neutral feelings to all beliefs and would not quickly support one over another (particularly when neither are my own).

I apologise if that seemed like a rant.

Hmm... Well, they shouldn't use a place that's owned by someone else, without permission.
That's just common sense, for F' sake.

    • 0
      Krunal Jun 9, 07
Then they can't use anything, cause every property is owned by someone, and if you want to do a game based in the UK, you have to try and make the places as real as possible. By what your saying, they can't even use the word "London" without asking the people OF london for permission to use it.

The whole thing smells like crap...look at what they said:

        quote
The Playstation 3 game, Resistance: The Fall of Man, depicts a virtual shoot-out between rival gunmen inside the place of worship, and shows hundreds killed in an orgy of blood.
For starters, Resistance isin't even that bloody, the Resistance storyline features Humans vs. Aliens (butchering the comment above to bits), and "hundreds"??? Where did they get that number? Ah yeah, from their asses of course.

AND if they had to ask for permission to duplicate the Cathedral, wouldn't they have have to ask for permission to duplicate the fields of Cheddar Gorge, the Bridge on Thames River, etc?
        • 0
          Soul79 Jun 9, 07
For starters, I don't care if Resistance isn't that bloody, I don't care if it's humans vs. aliens, all of that is pointless to be complaining about. And yes they would have to have permission to use all of the things you mentioned. They probably did or the people didn't press charges. And don't tell me that they did have permission, show me.

I see their point, but at this point the Church and Sony are essentially pointing the finger at each other.

Whatever verdict comes of this will be interesting, no doubt.

Sony's response was something like "We haven't used the church when creating the game, we may have gotten a few ideas but thats about it"

(Saw it on the News...got addicted to Sky News Saw the news story, then went to the website, to get this news article to post )

    Final Blade Jun 9, 07
OK first off A church is a holy place and should not be destroyed, however let this be known that sony did have permission to use the cathedral for the game. But the real obvious answer that there misinterpreting is, its just a game and its not real.
Im ashamed of some of you ppl to say that the church is no different than others. The fact is it is different.

You see in the U.S the majority of the population is catholic or Christians, and in other areas including U.S the church is a sacred place and should not be desecrated. Its more special than most buildings, since the church been around more than any of the buildings in this time.
Existenz i was liking your post b4 you posted that the bible isnt factual, for starters how do you know that. Im suppose to be a christian or catholic but my beliefs are a combination of other religions, the point is there isnt proof that it isnt factual.
The only thing that came close to supporting your outrageous theory is the Da'vinci code The book Dan brown wrote. Its an awesome book BTW, thats the only time that things made sense to actually think about things. Though it wasn't real it did shed some light and new things that made very strong points.
Other than that the bible is more factual than any other religious book.
But like i said b4 the game is just a game, and the monsters destroy the cathedral more than we do. So sony should not be sued. nor Apologize. However i agree that the church do lie about somethings in this day and age, especially if it means getting money from a successful business like sony.

      The Church:

      1) Does not pay taxes
      2) Is a waste of money and concrete

The first one is factual, and the last reason is pretty much up for debate (except the concrete part).

They should have no right, whatsoever to complain about dumb crap like that. Nor should the government ever back them up for petty insults like this one, this lawsuit would be another colossal, unecessary waste of money.

        Final Blade Jun 9, 07
Well the first one is true, However im agreeing with you guys that sony shouldn't get sued. However im just saying that a church is a sacred place, but in a game where you dont even know if thats the real 100% cathedral, you shouldnt get crazy. Besides its just a game, Thats all im saying.

    Rinkydink Jun 9, 07
If they have permission, then I don't see why they are fussing so much over it. If a game gets restricted to such a degree that certain buildings cannot even be altered in any way then that is just plain embarassing.

    Subtle Demise Jun 9, 07
Yes, it's just a video game, but people get upset over content in video games more often than they really should. This is really nothing new. It's been happening since 1976, when people were reported to have actually set fire to the arcade cabinets of Exidy's Death Race.

Some Christians really are crack pots. it's usually the older, grandma community of Christians that almost seem as if they're looking to start a fight. Freakin' hell...

Clearly very diluded people. Why aren't they sueing the thousands of action film producers who have used churches in their games?

If I was in a group that rightfully owned a piece of architecture, I'd be pissed too if some A-hole game designers went and put it in their game without permission.

I'd like to know how the designers would feel if the church owners added paintings to the walls of the church that infringed the copyrights of the videogame company. You know, they should actually do that. That would probably teach those pricks a lesson.

Edit: Whoops, sorry. Did I fly off the handle a bit there?
