Novels that really should be games

tekmosis | June 13, 2007 | Other | Misc
Gaming Today writes up on some novels they feel should be turned into videogames. Albeit, I've never heard of any of them and if you've never, either just read their descriptions to get a bit of an idea on the plot behind the books. One of the books however, 'Starship Troopers' if it's related to the movie, there's already a couple games out for that.

One book that they mention which stuck out a bit to me was, I Am Legend – by Richard Matheson.

quote
Basic Premise:
The book opens with the monotony and horror of the daily life of the protagonist, Robert Neville. Neville is apparently the only survivor of an apocalypse caused by a pandemic of a bacterium the symptoms of which are very similar to vampirism. He lives in a house fortified against nocturnal attacks by the roaming infected, and sallies forth by daylight to kill the sleeping vampires.

Why it would be awesome:
Racing against the clock to fortify your house and supplies during the daytime, along with Neville’s solitary-induced psychosis would promise a thrilling experience. The real beauty here is that you would really feel like your home in the game is your only true “safe” place, and would immerse the gamer into the world like never before.

Are there any books you would like to see made into a game?

I believe Dreamcatcher or The Adventure Games Company has been releasing adventure game-styled adaptions of many classic works like the mysteries by Agatha Christie. It's too bad the list is more geared towards fantasy and sci-fi, but I guess this is a sign that gaming still has limitations in what experiences it can provide compared to other forms of storytelling. Should gaming even bother supplanting these? After all, there's always room for other forms of entertainment.

I would love to see I Am Legend and The Gunslinger books be transformed into videogames. I think they would be really good games if done right.

The book about Robert Neville sounds to similar to the Resident Evil series, don't get me wrong the RE series is great this novel may not turn out to be a great game if all you had to do is "race against the clock".
