Hot Shots Golf 5 for the PlayStation 3 was expected to be a big hit for Sony in Japan, and it certainly didn't disappoint by making a debut at second place in Japanese charts this week with 152,000 copies sold. Yet in the end it was Mario Party that stole golf's thunder, despite being criticized as a series milked by Nintendo for all it's worth. Mario Party 8 for the Wii topped sales charts in its opening week with sales of 265,000 copies, beating the golf-themed runner up by over 110,000 units.

Mario Party 8 has also enjoyed a measure of success in North America, and even became a source of controversy in PAL territories due to inclusion of a word deemed offensive in Europe. It's certainly attracted its share of attention, but it will cool down eventually... until the inevitable sequel is announced!

It did. People are still stupid enough to buy the same game for the 8th time, though.

I really only enjoyed the games 1-3. Then they started getting weirder and less fun to play. MP8 looks okay, but I doubt I'm going to get another Mario Party.

It's just like Madden. Every year: different package, same product. Consumers are retarted. Not me. I'm a *bleep*ing God.

You do know that every year of Madden there are different players and rosters, right?

      Plus this year has online.

Who cares, we are basically playing the same game again but with slightly better graphics. I admit the online is a great idea for Madden, but otherwise the games have no evolved at all. All you need is one Madden game and thats it.

I am shocked people keep getting this game and how it has even got to the 8th version already, but on the good note the Wii should offer the fun back into this game, as having the remote it is offering a lot more and new range of games that it can do.

True enough. The Wii setup should make it a different and fresh experience. Of course, we can fully expect Mario Party 9, 10 and 11 to resume the cash-in trend later on.
