Six Things That Suck About The Next-Gen Consoles

Krunal | August 05, 2007 | Other | Playstation 3 Wii Gaming Tech/Hardware
Now I know for a fact that this article will most likely cause some flaming between systems (and so it will be monitored a bit more by moderators :p). However, the points made for EACH of the Next Gen consoles, are quite true, and should be taken with the stone to the heart. Here's the quick run-down on the points, but be sure to check the source for more details as to why they are bad:

Microsoft XBOX360
  1. Red Ring of Death
  2. Lack of rechargeable batteries
  3. Microsoft Points
  4. Lack of built-in wireless networking
  5. Lack of hard drive as standard
  6. The frickin’ huge power brick
Nintendo Wii
  1. It’s Underpowered
  2. Expensive controllers
  3. Wii Points
  4. Crappy ports
  5. Lack of rechargeable batteries
  6. The online experience
Sony Playstation 3
  1. Game library
  2. Crappy ports
  3. Expensive
  4. No rumble
  5. No headset as “standard”
  6. No Rear USB Ports
Well with 18 reasons about why 3 different systems are bad... do you agree with them or not?
I realize that not everyone owns each of the next…errr…current generation consoles. This puts me in the fortunate position of being able to compare them and offer a unique insight into the pros and cons of each console. The pros are easy to write about, though, as all three consoles have a lot going for them, so I decided to go all negative and focus on five things that suck about each console. These are presented in no particular order, so it’s not a “top five six” list or anything like that.

I know I'm a fanboy and therefore kind of obliged to say this but from those points the Xbox 360 does look so much more better.

    1. Red Ring of Death is a massive issue I'll admit to that, worst problem out of all of next gen consoles.
    2. Is a £10 Play & Charge kit so much to ask for?
    3. Everything can't always be free
    4. A nuisance I'm sure but there's plenty of people like me that have their 360 next to their modem so this is no problem
    5. You get given the choice to want it or not, most people want it but some rather save the money, how is this something that "sucks"?
    6. A nuisance I guess but it can be easily hidden away

Now compare them points to an expensive console with a bad game library as of now and a console that's underpowered with poor online and I honestly do believe the 360 points are not as bad as the others.

Pretty good reasons, heh, but I can come up with six reasons each that make these next-gen consoles good

    1.Expensive controllers
    2.Wii Points
    3Lack of rechargeable batteries
    4.The online experience

1- you dont need the nunchuck, so its really only 40$ per controller ( with is the same as PS3 controller )
2- PS3`s PSN Network makes you pay for previous games also.
3- Can use any rechargable battery and ones made specifically for wii
4- i think the online experience is great, a mic (for online chat) would perfect it.

I argue that the nunchuck plays a rather important part in the Wii. I've played a few games on the Wii and most of them have needed the nunchuck one way or another, not buying one is rather silly in my opinion.

You get number 2 wrong. What they mean is that you have to buy "Wii Points" rather being told the actual price of the item that your buying (for example, I knew that I was paying £2.99 for the R:FoM map expansion pack) where as Microsoft and Nintendo players have to use some sort of converter to see how much they are actually paying.

What is the actual conversation rate? I don't even know to be honest.

        JJBDude | August 05, 2007
Bah I always forget (not know for sure) what the rate is but it's something like £4.25 for 500 Microsoft Points, 500 points will buy you 1 of the majority of Arcade games (they are 400 points) and then a few gamer pics and maybe a theme (if you are lucky) with the last 100.

All my friends and I have wireless controllers with a rechargeable batteries for the 360. I had them since I got it in Christmas 05. Am I misreading anything?

They ran out of points to give to the 360 and Wii so they added that rather lame one.

Like JJBdude, I'm somewhat a Playstation 3 fanboy myself, and so I think I'll also respond about the Playstation 3's negatives first.
    1. Game library - I must agree not too many good games at the moment, I personally only have one PS3 game, but then again, I'm not too worried, in fact I'm happy. I'm away from home (and my PS3) for the next year - minus weekends - and so it's good that there are no games for me that want me to go home rather than work.
    2. Crappy ports - I don't really play them, and to be honest, I don't feel this effects me much, I'm sure they will bring some good ports sooner or later... (FFVII anyone )
    3. Expensive - I live in the UK, I paid £425 for my console, and it didn't come with anything. Yet I'll say I'm more than happy with what I paid. Personally I think we in the UK can afford it (well I can), but I do feel bad for those that can't buy it, so this point is quite a good one.
    4. No rumble - Damn sony for their "No rumble controller in the work" article that was recently seen on the net. I want rumble... I don't use it much, but hey, it never hurt to have, so why remove it - yes I know why they removed it
    5. No headset as “standard” - Well they are making up for it, with Warhawk (if you buy the disc) coming together with a bundled bluetooth headset. But I'd have preferred one to be bundled with it. I hate the current one that I use.
    6. No Rear USB Ports - Doesn't really effect me much. I've got plenty of USB extensions if I need it, and even so the only thing I connect to the PS3 via the USB is the controller when I need to update my system (I connect to my laptop to charge my controller, which is more closer to me, and it requires the front anyway) and my keyboard, which again requires the front. When I get The Eye of Judgement, thats when this will probably be a big problem... probably.

For me, I'm more than glad that the PS3 has less chance of breaking due to a manufacturing fault (RRoD) than the XBOX360, and plus the controllers can be simply charged by connecting to any USB device which makes it even better.

    PS3:

    1) The game library is obviously a temporary problem, with damn good games coming soon (starting with Warhawk).

    2) The port problems are pretty bad, yeah...I'd still consider this a temporary problem as well.

    3) Expensive? Online is free, No add-ons included (USB chord charges controller batteries, built in HDD, HDMI output,Wi-Fi)

    4) Rumble...this is coming sooner or later.

    5) Headset, how about the bluetooth headset bundled with Warhawk's BD, like Krunal mentioned?

    6) No rear USB ports??? Are the 4 USB ports in the front not enough?

Why does everyone care so passionately about rumble?

    Oooooooh hoo shaking controllers.

Am I the only person who thought it was annoying? My friend always argued that it helped you know when you're getting shot/attacked/ect. If you need you hands to vibrate to a point of numbing to realize you're being shot, give up on video games.

I really don't care about rumble tht much either. I mean I like it and I don't see why you don't, but I'm a bigger fan of SIXAXIS, although both would have been incredible.

        Krunal | August 06, 2007
If they add rumble to the controllers then by default the controller will have both SIXAXIS and Rumble. They're not going to get rid of the SIXAXIS just for the rumble

Seeing as Krunal has already broken down the PS3's main points, I'll just add and elaborate on what he's already said.

Game Library - I'm kinds glad that there aren't too many good games yet. I'm in a similar predicament to Krunal on this. Sure, it's bad in general, but from a personal standpoint, it's rather convenient.

Crappy Ports - Who plays ports?

Expensive - It took me 3 months to save for my PS3, with extended warranty and a game, and I'm not disappointed, though this is a pertinent point with many.

No Rumble - I don't notice nor really care for it anymore. I don't really care whether it comes back or not.

No Standard Headset - Totally agree with this; though with Warhawk coming that should be a moot point for me.

No Rear USB Ports - Not a real problem, tbh. Surely you can just wrap the cord around the console.

Well i have to agree on the wii and xbox problems and some of the PS3 problems, though they aren't really an issue.
    1. The no rear USB ports are more of a want not a need.
    2. Rumble well like krunal said and most know its coming soon.
    3. Headset, well you don't need a headset as a standard with the system. Thats more of a want than a need.
    4. Port games yeah are a problem cause devs are lazy.
    5. Game library yea isn't exactly a low, but should i remind everyone the 360 library during launch and 6 months later.
    6. And price, well like Seeker X said for what your getting its a good deal, or a steal.
But thats up to the people who wants to shell out money to get all three, if i had alot of dough i would have all three. But since i don't i can't bring myself to get a 360 due to problems. And for the wii i don't need to buy one since my sis just got one so that solves that problem.

Quick question, is it actually even possible to enter the exact amount that you want to spend on the PSN Store? When I went to buy the R:FoM expansion pack, I HAD to put in £5, but I had heard that you can put the exact amount in... if so then thats fine, otherwise, that's pretty much a similar issue to the Microsoft Points (the point where you had to put more than you needed).

Most of the things sold on the Live marketplace are the equivalent of any given number of purchase options.

But I have a rechargeable battery pack in my X360 controller. *GASP*

Putting funds in the Wallet is not really exact. Either $5 or $10, or $20...I'm guessing it's to speed things up when adding funds?

I have to say, on my PS2 I keep rumble turned off in all my games. I will jump out of my seat if my controller starts virbating during some cutscene when I'm not expecting it and I have dropped it more times than is probably good for it (and I wonder why the O button stopped working on one of them...) because of this. (I know. I suck.)

    6. the huge power brick

what's the downside to that? It's just a power brick. I can't imagine how it could possibly be listed as something that sucks about the 360..

and the entire ps3 list was moronic. They obviously couldn't find 6 real flaws with the console.

no rear USB ports? Damn, I'm not getting the PS3 because it doesn't have any

Those were the stupidest reasons I saw in my life.

I rather my system be expensive then have red rings of death.

You have to realize that the Wii hasn't had any games to show off the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection experience... YET. Mario Strikers Charged is pretty good for no lag, but I understand what you mean about the lack of other features. Just wait until Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
