It was a case of a man being kidnapped, bound, and tortured. However, were it not for a PSP, the man would never have known freedom, and if he did, it could have been days/weeks/months from when he was actually freed if ever.

A nine day ordeal is exactly what Jose Ignacio Ortega Garcia faced, when he a friends ex-wife showed up at his home one day with two men who were looking for a job. Having been in the middle of something with fellow co-workers at the construction company which he owened, he decided to meet the men properly another day. When they met, he showed them a potential job site, and whilst they were on their way back, he was led to a secluded spot and thus, his ordeal began.

Kidnapped, forced to write checks for the two men (named Sanchez& Gonzales), and beaten in a hotel room. He was also forced to stay in the same clothes for nine days without bathing, until the "fortunate" day that Gonzales got Sanchez a PSP to play whilst looking after Garcia. However, Sanchez diverted his attention from Garcia towards his PSP, and gave Garcia the opportunity to escape from the room, and alert the hotel staff and authorities.

A simple case of 'Playing the PSP saved my life'.

“Garcia was also forced to place a monitored telephone call to his wife in which he was forced to say that he had left her for another woman so she would not call the police,”

Extreme case of luck... but convinient for him. It'd have sucked to have lived in that hotel room on a day to day basis.

This would have been more newsworthy if the PSP was the actual tool used to do some communication, not a distraction. Else, just slamming it against the guy's face/balls would have been just as effective.

Good advertising tagline, mesh what happened very indirectly into a direct phrase like "PSP saved my life" to give it some publicity. I'm not trying to underplay what happened to the guy, but accrediting the PSP with "saving his life" seems a very convenient overdramatization in this case, had he perhaps used the PSP to get a message out that saved him it would be different. The kidnappers had not shown any intent to kill the man, and being that they kept him alive and in custody for 9 days, they could've had they wanted to.

I'm fairly sure they wanted to get as much money out from him as possible, before killing him. Them having seen their faces, and knowing how they knew him, I'm fairly certain they would not have kept him alive at the end of the ordeal.

As for as the PSP is concerned, if you think about it, it really was a saviour for him. You may not think much of it, but if you think about it, without the PSP to distract the guy, he wouldn't have been able to do what he did.

in conclusion, if you're doing something important, try not to have a PSP near you.
On the other hand, if someone else is doing something bad to you, try to place a PSP near them to distract them. (Note: not as effective with the DS, Xbox, or Wii)

I thought he would have used the PSP to call online for help, though its still pretty strange he escaped while the other guy was playing a game Oo

That's what I was thinking was going to be the case when I read the title of this article, how a man used his console to secretely call for help. Instead he just got lucky as someone else was distratced from looking after him, still a interesitng story though.

To be honest, when I was reading this article, I thought... hmmm a guy was saved by a PSP, was he stupidly given a PSP by his kidnappers to pass time, and then he used it to call for help... how stupid could the kidnappers be... turns out they're stupider than that.

It was not the psp it was a console. Same thing could have happened with the DS.

I wouldn't say custody, perhaps just they took away his rights.

Lucky guy that the kidnapper was too busy with his PSP. I guess the guy thought the PSP was pretty sweet if he got so addicted that he couldn't watch his 'hostage'. I wonder what game he was playing...I think I'll get it.
