FaceBreakers true name

tekmosis | January 31, 2008 | Other | Playstation 3 Wii
It was announced yesterday in an exclusive by 1up that Electronic Arts (EA Games) is putting out a new boxing game called FaceBreaker.

FaceBreaker looks like a cross between Team Fortress 2 and Ready 2 Rumble.

From rumors its been said that the concept name for the game was originally 'Pummel'[1]. However, the name was changed because of its meaning in German. In German, 'Pummel', or, 'Pummelchen' translates to (little) roly-poly[2] or, (little) fat kid. We've seen name changes before (ala, Revolution to Wii) but why the change in this case, I'm not too sure. Perhaps the silly translation of the name itself and the factoring in of the German gaming market was taken into consideration by EA.

We'd love to hear your opinion on both names and which you would prefer over the over! (Personally, I like the sound of Pummel)

Contacting EA themselves to squash this rumor, unfortunately resulted in a reply of "what ever was internal stays internal; FaceBreaker is called FaceBreaker".

A lot of games change their names because the translation doesn't work out just right. Characters, consoles and products for the same reason. The Sega Master System was called the Sega genesis in NA because they couldn't get the name for it. The Revolution -> Wii thing shouldn't really count, as Revolution was ALWAYS just a code name and was never announced as the official console name. I believe Perfect Dark for the N64 was originally called Red and Black in Japan. Because the name didn't look quite right in Japanese.

Names are tricky. It's usually easier to make up a word.

I have a feeling the name was changed because the word 'pummel' isn't commonly used in America. A Bond movie name was changed from 'License Revoked' to 'License to kill' because at test screenings people didn't know what 'revoked' mean't.
