Valve artist, Jeremy Bennett, has revealed some of the Left 4 Dead boxart designs that were abandoned.
Go to the source to read the history of each design, and how Valve got to their final boxart design.
Hello. My name is Jeremy Bennett, and I'm an artist at Valve. Most gamers only ever get to see the finished product of a game cover, so we thought some of you might find it interesting to hear the process that led to Left 4 Dead's final art. As you'll see, there were quite a few attempts along the way, all of them eventually abandoned.

But, being that my favorite color is green, I like the one they went with best.
They made the right choice
Anyone else notice that the hand in the pic for the article has a lot more wrist showing? It messed with me at first, I thought my mind was stretching it or something.

Also...they could have made the green cover better if they used the left hand
It's red, it's dark, it's got zombies on it, and the 4 survivors abstractly drawn. In a way it basically gives you a much better scope of the game than the official cover art...which leaves me wondering why didn't they pick THAT one.
...the fourth one is just creepy as hell.
