Valve artist, Jeremy Bennett, has revealed some of the Left 4 Dead boxart designs that were abandoned.
Go to the source to read the history of each design, and how Valve got to their final boxart design.

Hello. My name is Jeremy Bennett, and I'm an artist at Valve. Most gamers only ever get to see the finished product of a game cover, so we thought some of you might find it interesting to hear the process that led to Left 4 Dead's final art. As you'll see, there were quite a few attempts along the way, all of them eventually abandoned.

I like em' all for the most part.

But, being that my favorite color is green, I like the one they went with best.

Only one I really like is the third one, the rest don't suit me.

    They made the right choice

Indeed they did pick the right cover. The others look too generic/cheesy.

Hm, when I first saw the cover of L4D, I thought it was terribly clever. Glad they stuck with it.

The green one is the best. I like the one where they're surrounded too, but not nearly on the same level as the hand.

Anyone else notice that the hand in the pic for the article has a lot more wrist showing? It messed with me at first, I thought my mind was stretching it or something.

Also...they could have made the green cover better if they used the left hand (notice it only has 4 fingers on a dead body)

    The third one...

It's red, it's dark, it's got zombies on it, and the 4 survivors abstractly drawn. In a way it basically gives you a much better scope of the game than the official cover art...which leaves me wondering why didn't they pick THAT one.

...the fourth one is just creepy as hell.

Sure, it might give you better scope of the game, but the official cover is far more intriguing. The third one would just blend into the sea of other soldier/war-driven cover art.

Personally, I don't really find it intriguing at all. And I personally found the green overall theme to be a little too weird. Though I never really cared much for art because the game is *bleep*ing good anyways.

What I mean to say, is that it stands out from the crowd far better.

I watch the progress of this game, however i just didn't do anything for me and as many others complained about the cost i thought the cost was rather ridiculous.
