Red Fly Studios, the same bunch working on the Ghostbusters video game, are set to release another title this October. Called Mushroom Men, it clearly isn't your ordinary game, but that looks to be for the better.

The DS version is subtitled Rise of the Fungi (RotF), while the Wii edition is subtitled Spore Wars (SW). Both tell separate stories in the culture of the Mushroom Men. RotF takes the player along the early history of the Men, when they're just learning to walk, communicate, interact with their world, and defend against creatures. Here the player develops their skills, abilities and histories before the Spore Wars begin, which of course is where the Wii version starts off. It seems a bit Pikmin-like, which is great news for those who were holding out for that on DS.

The DS version itself seems very impressive graphically, considering, though both titles look solid. Below are trailers for each.

Mushroom Men – Rise of the Fungi tells the story of the birth of the Mushroom Men. It starts out with the simple tribe of Bolete learning to live off the land. They struggle against their environment for a time until the Amanitas Empire arrives. To their dismay, the Bolete learn that their fellow Mushroom Men aren't any better than the hostile insects and other creatures that threaten them.
