NA Wii Shop Channel Update: 09/08/08: North America, Are You Ready to Prove Yourself a Manly Man?

Akira_EX | September 08, 2008 | Press Release | Wii
With the Hanabi Festival wrapping up over in Europe, North America gets its own little import week this week, with a pair of shoot-em-ups that never made its way to our neck of the woods until today. Accompanying the two games is an all-new WiiWare puzzle game that is sure to rock your fancy.

That WiiWare game is titled Groovin' Blocks, and is developed by newcomer developer Empty Clip Studios, and is their first title. While at its heart it is a matching-falling-block puzzle game, it adds something new to the mix: further increase your score by playing to the beat of the music, and hit the "Superbeats" to double your score multiplier. The game features 27 different stages with 15 different levels of powerups, in 3 difficulty levels. You can also go head-to-head or co-op with a friend, with powerups in head-to-head becoming attacks to deter your opponent.

The first import Virtual Console today is Final Soldier, a vertical shoot-em-up for the TurboGrafx16. It is a part of Hudson's Star Soldier series, using the series' familiar weapon types, it is considered one of the best games in the series. With the game's four different weapon types and three different variations of each type, the game boasts up to twelve different weapons for your ship to destroy the oncoming invaders. Final Soldier also features a Caravan Mode, with a 2 Minute and 5 Minute Score Attack available.

The other Virtual Console title today is also for the TurboGrafx, the Masaya horizonal shoot-em-up Cho Aniki. The series garners a cult following from its homoerotic imagery, and the general sense of crazyness and "WTF" that is sure to prove one's mettle. It is that imagery that sets it apart from other shoot-em-ups. Control either Idaten or Benten as they strive to bring an end to the rule of the emperor of Planet Builder. Our protagonists are flanked by the Muscle Brothers, the manly-men Adon and Samson, out of whose heads beams will shoot out to destroy enemies through five stages. Defeated enemies will leave behind their protein which you can use to bulk up and become more powerful. Are you ready to prove yourself a manly man?
